I have an old Ideal 311414 HP single cavity gas check mold. What's the best way to keep the doggone hollow-point pin from sticking?
Will BullPlate on the pin work?

If you are talking about it sticking in the bullet?
Is it bent?
If not try twisting it out before the sprue is cut off and/or the mould blocks are opened.

Thanks. Not bent. Before the sprue is cut... sounds like a plan. Let me try that.
Yup, I twist mine out immediately before I cut the sprue.

There is no 'right' that requires me to work for you or you to work for me!
That was the second lesson my 457122HP mold taught me. The first was to keep the pin hot.
Robert
And make sure it isn't boogered up. No nicks or scratches. Regards, WOody
Take a kid along
Run a wire across your pot, put a small circle in it, and let it rest in the alloy between pours to keep it hot.

The only thing I can add is, I use a #2 pencil to deposit a bit of graphite on the pin.
I have 1 that`s cylinderal (straight, no taper at all) & a bit deep for my liking but covering it with the pencil helps quite a bit!
Useing a oil based lube either 2 cycle oil or Bull Plate would produce bubbles/voids within the boolit as it cooked off.It seems on the tapered pins the oil based would vent down the taper somewhat , but still cause voids to some degree.

Keep it hot. I have a small metal bracket attached to the top of my pot. It heats up when the pot is on and the pin is kept in the bracket after it is pulled from the mold until the next pour.
OK. New issue. No sticking but I'm not getting a good fill out on the very tip of the bullet. Running #2 alloy at 750°. Do I need to run the melt a little hotter? Nice shiny bullets now with good fillout at the lube groove and rings.
