    Quality Flintlock Shotgun?

A flintlock shotgun is next up on my short list of guns I want before I die.

I am familiar with muzzle loaders but they have all been inlines or percussion.

I know I want a flintlock and from the research I have done I understand a quality lock is key to enjoying a flintlock. I would really like a smoothbore that I can use for small game and dove hunting. What can the experts here recommend for a quality flintlock shotgun? Double barrels would be ideal. The smaller the gauge the better. Also the gun must have a choke. Cylinder bore shotguns are worthless in my opinion at least for hunting.

I understand I may need to go custom and would be happy to hear recommendation for a gunsmith that specializes in flintlocks.

E-mail Ed Parry in Conn. He builds flintlock rifles & shotguns. Does nice work, but is not cheap. His e-mail is
EDPARRY@BLACKHARTLONGARMS.COM, I think he has a catalogue or he can post pictures of his work.

I ordered a double barrel 16 flint last June, should have it in two years yet. Quality is not fast, not cheap. The gun will be cylinder bore for compation and hunting. If you play around with wads and loads you can get close to modified patterns from a cylinder bore. I currently shoot a 28 ga flint trade gun, 3/4 oz of shot will break any skeet target thrown if the shooter does their part. A few of the guys shoot 410s, cylinder bore and do well on skeet. I have several 9 and ten bore origonals, 1 1/8 oz breaks trap well in these guns. I also hunt ducks and geese with the 10s, I don't have therange that I have with my modern 10 ga simi auto but plenty of omph for decoying birds. It just takes some work and research to do it.

Pedersoli makes a nice one. Currently carried by Cabelas and seems to go on sale occasionally.

Who's building your double 16 bore, if I could be so bold as to ask? (feel free to PM if you don't want to go public) Tough to find a good builder for them even at the high cost

This is one I built during the 80s.The barrels are from an old 10 Gauge Breach Loading Hammergun that had been scrapped for some reason, the owner gave me them.It was necessary to square the forcing cones and fit sleeves in the chambers, make two interlocking Breach Plugs. The top tang is a piece of Angle Steel cut and shaped. The Furniture is Mild steel cut and sahaped. The Locks are castings from E J Blackley here in England.I made the Springs and Lock Internals.I had the gun Proofed at the Birmingham gun Barrel Proof House.

One thing missing from a muzzleloading shotgun is the forcing cone!!!! Without that funnel to deform shot, the M.S. tends to shoot one grade tighter than "modern" shotguns (Cylinder bore tends to pattern like Imp. cyl or possibly leaning towards Modified.)

Nice work col4570! I feel inspired to try building one myself now. Probably start with something simpler like a single bore.

What brands are considered to be a good quality lock and trigger assembly?

I'm currently building a Pennsylvania Fowler kit from Jim Chambers in 20 ga..

Hard to beat a Siler lock for quality. Mine will have a simple pinned trigger.

    Chambers website is: www.flintlocks.com

Don't know about that, as I have read good things on all reviews of them. Have yet to see pictures of one broken while shooting BP in proper dosages...

I am sure there are MANY quality locks out there. But my locktime is ridiculously short and my rifle, as far as I am concerned, very fine. It is a Siler lock, and because of it, I will always choose to put a siler lock on any flinter I ever own. No reason to try something new when this one works so well.
