Start at 28 gr of 3031 and work up in 1 gr increments until accuracy goes south. Been a long time since I used 3031 but my records show it did well with 311291 in the M1903 also. I did not use any wad or filler with 3031. Best accuracy came in the 1800 to 1900 fps range. I stopped using 3031 and switched to 4895 because my thrower would not throw anywhere close to uniform charges with 3031, had to weigh each charge. Also 4895 is available as a surplus powder for half the price (used to be anyways) of 3031. But like I say the 3031 worked fine for me.

Not a powder you mentioned but 20 gr of 2400 under my Lyman 311291 boolits shoots half inch groups all day long out of my Husquavarna at 100 yards.

................Hello Hylander, and welcome. A good cartridge to start with. It's main claim to fame is being a 30 cal (lots of moulds available for it) and as a old time full power military cartridge it's been tested to death with cast loads

We have data for loads from the Lyman 311252 which is a 77gr RNPB intended for the 32ACP to the Lyman 311284 at about 220 grs.

    Larry:

I have loaded my 03 with AA 2495 and RCBS 200 gr SIL boolit. 29.4 to 35.4 in 2 grain incriments with dacron filler. Will go to range on Wednesday. 2495 has worked well in 30-30 and 91 Argie.
When I retired down here from Kent Wa. I continued to shoot cast. Another fellow who was shooting Hi Power said he did not have an unlimited rifle. I don't either. He said we could shoot cast. So we did. There is now an additional fellow and he says he can get two more. So soon we will all go to the range for Ironsighted Springfields with lead boolits. Most people down here have no idea how well boolits can be shot. Things are getting better.

    Talking

It took me a few YEARS to find a load I could live with. Heres what I use:
    Lee C309-200-R, Air cooled WW+1.5% tin, sized .310" G.C. (Lyman 311284 also)
Neck sized brass with WLRM primer
    IMR SR7625, 13.5grains
seat bullet to engrave rifling (MY OAL is 3.290")
    no vel. available (no chrony)
From the bags, I can swat grapefruit all day long at 100 YRD, with NO leading. I use a homemade lube of Beeswax/paraffin/STP-lucas oil additive. It's medium texture lube.
Oh, the rifle is a Rem 721, no bells/whistles. Hope this helps

If he hasn't He might try

311291 Lyman #2 alloy Lyman graphite lube RP cases. 33 gr IMR 3031 cci primer with a tuft of dacron over the powder. (I' Know not needed but shrank my groups)

From my 03a3 springfield with a 3X9 scope it will shoot 1.5 to 1.75 inch groups at 100 yards and has the power to kill a deer right now. (30-30 load in 06 case.)

Maybe he just got so interested in shooting he forgot to check back.

    Good Shooting,

    TwoTrees

My 1903 shoots accurately with 16.5 grains of 2400. You might want to slug your 03-A3 first as I have one and my barrel stamped 9-45 is about .311. I heard the barrel tolerances got a bit loose towards the end of the war.

Sorry guys, I just found my way back
I had sold my 03A3, but just got it back from the guy I sold it to
I wanted to start loading for it, but seems Cast rifle boolits are just as expensive as jacketed
I figured they would be less expensive like the Pistol Boolits are.

that would be great, but no place to get the Lead around here.
Most tire and wheel places won't sell the lead and the ones that will
    want way to much.

I can't just tell you how much of a powder to put in a case, and guarantee that it will shoot good.
