    Gas Checks

I have always cast for pistol bullets so speed was never a problem. My understanding is that 1000 fps is the max speed for lead bullets but does this increase any above 1000 fps when you use a gas check?

I have run PB to 1800 fps in revolvers. 1300 to 1600 fps is no problem.
I do use a GC boolit in a rifle to over 2400 fps in the 30-30, others exceed that in other calibers.
You will get a lot of good answers soon.

Wow, you have much to learn.

A good plain base can be driven to at least 1400 fps in many situations with great results. A gas check can, with the right situation, get great results into the 2700 fps realm or beyond.

Lead bullets are capable of far more than Joe Shooter is aware, you just need to get info from the right source.

Read up here, you will be amazed at what is possible with lead bullets. It will open your eyes and make you realize how much BS is fed to the masses.

Thanks for the info so far. I would like to cast for my AR15 but obviously need to learn a lot more before I start. I have never used gas checks but it looks they may work.

There are many variables in when gas checks are useful or needed. I have a low velocity 44 spl that tends to lead unless I run gas checks. Until I work out what is causing the leading the gas check is a quick fix.

I'm not familiar with attempting to push a cast boolit out of an AR but with the correct alloy I don't see why not, with any luck maybe Larry Gibson will chime in here with a recommendation.

As far as 44 Special is concerned, I load 44 Special for a '95 Marlin and don't have any issues with it pushing a 214gr Lee SWC with TrailBoss. In fact it's a wickedly accurate load.
