yeah. Like a 7mm TCU short with a long neck for heavy cast in an AR, or like a long necked 300 blk necked to 7mm

domesticated, and SMUG. SMUG! Methinks he is momma's cat.
small caliber. pinhole bullet tips, 5 round mags, contains 4 of them. but can fire all 20 at once, particularly if he is relaxing on your lap and sees something exciting he needs to chase down. also contains two dull bayonets, not afraid to use them constantly.
Whiterabbit: yes he is Mommies cat, and he is all love.
Protects Mom when she is outside gardening. Very serious about that job.
His name is Feeps, and he's a 20 pounder. . Been known to burn out if scared.
Not much of a hunter, more of a lover.
Very fast.

[QUOTE=Whiterabbit;2440885]dumb question. for new cartridges and wildcatting, why ARE necks getting shorter? is there a distinct disadvantage to a long neck?
All I can figure is jacketed bullets don't need it and it eats into usable case capacity. Yes? Is there any other reason?"
The only advantage I see to a shorter neck is net case capacity gain, and not tons of that but it is in the picture for the one I'm working on. I see no other advantage unless you live in Indiana and join in with the guys taking 35 Rem and shortening the brass to Indiana legal 1.8 inches. TALK ABOUT A SHORT NECK. (NO other changes)
The 375 ruger and 375 Weatherby (not the 378 but the older 375) both have neck lengths less than caliber at around .305-.310.
That said, neck turning is a little more common these days as are collet dies and both of which give the shooter more uniform, and IMHO, more consistent neck brass to bullet contact and a short neck seems to work fine, within limits.

The .40 TeeHei (.40 TH for short) is a .45-70 Gov't casing necked down to accept bullets of .40 diameter. A small reason for this is that I have about 1000 leftover jackets for .40 bullets. (And no, I won't trade. I want to save them.)
The reason why I named this cartridge that is because it's my name. (.40 Teemu Heinonen)
how do you form the brass? run 45/70 into some other 40 cal bottleneck die?
Hello; Just came from the shop tonight, with my Lee Enfield re-barreled in .35 x .303 sure looks like the .358 Malcolm. Mine is regular .303 on the base, and .35 Rem. on the shoulder and the neck. Would you have the case specs of the .358 Malcolm? Might save me from thinking up a new name.
regards, camores2
You don't need to name the cartridge. You can choose to either name it or not.
What about a 7.62x39 Ackley Improved?
That round has a great amount of body taper to it, if you blew out the case to an 'improved' design, I bet it would be a stronger round than a .30-30.
I'm thinkin' .223 loaded to 150-250 ksi. Should duplicate 22 eargesplitten loudenboomer ballistics in a cheap case and the bolt thrust has to be fairly low too.
The 7.62x39 sired the PPC Family of Cartridges, they have been necked up and down. Saving to rechamber my Baikal Single Shot Rifle to 30PPC / 30 Bench Rest to clean up a rough Chamber. The 30PPC 30BR 30Major and 308x1,5" are really similar Cartridges most popular with the Bench Rest Crowd
Heres a link with a few numbers http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/30br/
I don't follow the 7.62x39 better than 30.30 argument simply because the 30.30 has greater Case Capacity then even an improved 7.62x39. Load a 30.30 to 7.62x39 pressure and chamber in a suitable Rifle and it will be streets ahead.
But that's not the point of a Wildcat Cartridge is it

Finally received my shipment. 2 Years and 2 months after ordering the barrel, bullets, and book I received the bullets and book. That's another thread coming in the future.

This must be it...
Almost,
.14 Eichelberger Flea. Formed from .32 ACP
The 9gr on the left streaks out @ 3400 FPS with 5gr of H110
The 12gr on the right makes 3000 fps with 4.9gr of 2400
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.
