help tameing the flamethrower!

Hi guys. I've just picked up a new toy and need some advice. I have shot and loaded for the m1 carbine for a while and ran into a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 cal. I thought it would be fun to throw some lead down range with and all I can say is WOWWEEE!!!!!. It has to be the loudest thing I have ever shot. Does anyone out there have some load data to tame the blast some? I have been using a lee 120 gr. gas check mold and IMR 4227 for my rifle ,but need some loads to make the pistol a little less...."snappy".

Try 5 - 6 gr Unique. The Ruger I used liked 5.5 gr Unique under the 118 gr 311316 really well.

Want to scare people?

Go shoot it at an indoor range. I have never been that shocked by concussion and flash as when a guy shot on of those near my at an indoor range. It was like a flash photo.

If you think the 30 is loud, try the 357 max in a 6 inch barrel. Talk about ears ringing! WOOOOO HEEEEE.

I don't think anything is louder than a 30 Carbine or hot loaded 32-20. The constant ringing in my ears is due in part to youthful indiscretion and 10.0 2400 under a 311316 in a Colt Army Special 32-20....lots and lots of them!

Try the suggested Bullseye load with the Hornady swaged SWC. Much nicer on the ear drums. It'll never be a 45 AR though. THe 30 Carb/32-20 CRACK! The AR booms.

Can it be made accurate with .32 S&W and .32ACP level loads?
How heavy of a boolit does it need to be accurate?
In a 6" barrel both are great for target and small critters.

I've never shot cast through mine. It won't chamber a boolit sized .309. With a max charge of H-110 and a 110 gr. j-word you're right it's a flamethrower.

221 fireball - accurately named, 256 Win Mag - almost as bad as Fireball, 30 Carbine Very loud indeed and the pitch is enough higher that it cuts thru hearing protection that 357 magnum didn't.

Plugs and muff's are your best bet - and of course downloading to plinker levels.

I don't see why not. If I can load the 32-20 down to 700 FPS or lower the Carbine should do it too. Boolit weight I don't know about, but I'd think a Lee Soup can should work.

Mine shoots cast with reduced loads quite well. Much more pleasant to shoot too.

It is odd to have all that noise, blast, and flame but almost zero recoil.

My 10 inch K-hornet Contender isn't fun for others either. A full case of A1680 and a 35 v-max gives an impressive ball of fire.

Got one i think you are right. When i was in the service i was out at the 100yd range shooting at a 2 gal can on the slope of the target berm, Second cylinder they came out of the range shack and ask "what the H#$%L are you shooting.

I've had a friend tell me that 3.5g of bullseye should make for a nice plinking round. I load for a .38 special and have titegroup on hand. Could I make a plinking round with the titegroup and a 120g cast boolit, and if so my cast boolit is a gas check boolit. Do I need the gas check since it should be under 1400 fps?

The 1400ish "rule" on GC's applies to rifles. Peestols and revolters are different. All I can say is try it. If nothing else, using a GC on a GC design makes things exponentially easier. Shoot and see. If it's works, great. If they are all over the paper add a GC and see what happens.

3.5 BE sounds a little hot to me. I'd be down more around the 2.5 grs area to start with.

How about a 44/284 in a 13" barreled xp100 and muzzle brake. Loaded with (IIRC) 65gr H335 and a 240gr bullet. Coke bottle shaped fireball about 6' long (yes, six feet!!)
My xp100 in 223 with military ball has a nice fireball
That durn 30 carbine blackhawk is no slouch either !!!
