I have a bunch of 311291 boolits I cast years ago, with no gas checks to go on them. Since boattail Jwords seem to shoot well, I thought I'd just load 'em and shoot 'em at low velocity from a 30/30. Anyone done this? How did it work out?

keep the velocity's in the 1-k range and you should do fine.
something like 8 grs of unique would be about right.
I use the same bullets in my aught six without checks and minimal lube . Nine point two grains of Unique shoots to the battle sights of my 03 up to about forty yards . No leading at all and ragged groups all the time . For the 30WCF I'd cut the powder charge back a little though , at least untill you get the hang of it .
I've shot them in mine 30WCF without checks but I don't remember the charge or which powder .

Yep to what the others say. This is where tumble lube really shines!

Thanks for the info, guys, looks like I'm GTG.

Run 5 +1
I use 8 or 9 grains of Unique.
I can't tell any difference in the two charges.

This question has been covered hundreds, if not thousands of times and the Gas Checks section was created just because the question is asked so often. Take a gander there and find all the info you want.
Thanks. I guess I missed the gas check section. appreciate the tip.

Thanks Bret, for some reason I have never noticed the gas check forum.
LOL I went to the gas check forum and read through it. Most of the threads in there I have read in other forums, so I'm wondering how long it has been there without my noticing it, or if I have been looking at it and don't remember. They do say memory is the second thing to go. lol
Don't feel bad. I just did the same exact thing. I tend to scroll through the pages quickly and the gas check boolit without gas check was the very first topic in that forum.
I was thinking of a 6 banger gas check mold for my 30-30 and 30-06 and running no gas check for the light loads. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a NOE saeco 315 mold that is plain base. Most of my shooting is with the less expensive light loads. I think I recall using 44 cal gas check boolits without the checks and doing fine. The lube may have been messy, can't remember that far back.
I have been running red dot and herco in my rifles with a 159 grain rn pb and I get 1100-1300 fps. I haven't noticed any leading and I can hit 12" steel plates at 100-160 yards, with iron sights.
It is cool to shoot 30-06 or 30-30 cheaper than what it cost me to load up 9mm pistol ammo with moly coated lead bullets.
Good luck with your load!
There are lots of designs that tend to do well bare based. I shot my 311316 for years that way just because I had no GC's and no sizer. You can do it. I have several PB rifle moulds that shoot pretty good as long as I keep the speed down. Small charges of fast burning powders, soft alloys, good lube and the willingness to experiment a bit will get you where you want to go.
The RCBS 30-150-CM (Cowboy Mould) is and excellent FB's .30 cal bullet that is useful in most .30 cal rifles.
