Forty-eight grains under a 168 grain Sierra Match King bullet works well in my '03 Springfield .30-06.
Imr 4064 Is my favorite for 308 I shot Berger 168gr vld the most, a good friend of mine set a lot of state records shooting that in competition here in ND he has some in the shooting hall of fame for his 308 with a grand. there are a lot of good powders available for the 308.
What bullet do you plan on using, make sure you use your reloading manual to get safe starting load and if you use burger VLD bullets you have to use there book for load info the pressures are different because the bullets set deeper in the case.
308 Win. --42.5 gr IMR4064 / 165 sierra in my Rem 700. Shoots around 3/4" at a 100 and drops deer like a hammer

Fort Benning used 39 grains 4064 with the 168 Sierra for years. All components were selected and then shipped to a custom loader during those years. Each contract was for 98,000 rounds. What their team uses now I don't know, neither gun or load. ... felix

If you use GI brass, cut loads not less than a full grain below max. Federal and Winchester primers give higher velocity and pressure than CCI or Remington. To approximate M118LR with Sierra 175MK in LC cases with Federal 210 or WLR load 40.8 of IMR 4064 at 2.810" OAL.
This is good to hear! Im getting low on Varget and imr4064 was about all that BiMart had in stock. Now the shelves are empty again, so glad i got it when i did.
It would be even more encouraging to hear about some CAST boolit loads with 4064...but maybe its not so hot for medium loads, as i have finally swallowed my pride and realized that my sweet accuracy with cast comes several hundred fps below the sierras or hornadys. And im OK with that
Not to hijack, but what about 4064 in a 45-70?
I use alot of 4064 with cast, GC bullets in military bolt rifles. Using #311299 in either 303 Brit., 7.6254R Russian, 7.5 Swiss for K31 or .30-'06 for Garand or 03A3 30 grains is a good 200 yard load in the boltguns, will need to increase a few grains to cycle Garand, but good starting load at 13 BHN.
Yup, 4064 works in 45/70 too.
4064 was and is a classic powder for the 308W. Many years ago I started with a can of 4064 a lee loader and a Rem. 788 LH in 308W. I still have that Remington...and lee loader but I mostly use 748 now.
I use IMR-4064 in 308 Win and 257 Roberts.

It's said to not be top choice for heavy bullets in the '06 but I've had good results with it pushing 220grn pills and EXCELLENT results pushing 130grn pills!, I've just recently picked up a 308 so and 4064 will be on the short list of powders to try out in it!

Also, Ken Waters used 48 grains 3031 with the 125 grainers for the same accuracy in the Browning Auto. Verified here. ... felix
