I use the hamster bedding and paint sticks also. Works really well. Then I have a box of pan lubed rejects from my BPCR rifle - I just drop one in and it will sink to the bottom bringing the beeswax and lanolin with it.

I use sawdust when smelting. When casting I use a small ball of beeswax. I do not smelt in my casting pot.

I like to use some motor oil to flux as well. I used to use used oil, but I only use synthetic oil in my truck and bike now. I'm not sure about using that stuff, so I started just using the cheapest oil I can get to use fresh oil for flux, since it only takes a tablespoon at a time.
I had breadfast with some car and planes guys one morning, and they mentioned 'synthetic' oil. I commented that synthetic leather is made from oil, so what is synthetic oil made from?!? I got glared at and was told it is just oil, only really, really refined, with lots of additives.

I buy clean hard ball, but I just stir some paraffin wax in and skim when running the machines.
