I believe the correct method is to weld some good 3/8" plate to the center and a reapplication of paint for Ivan the Red. If not it's a trip to the recycle bin for sure.

When I think back on all the **** I learned in high school it's a wonder I can think at all ! And then my lack of education hasn't hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall.
After you fix up the holes, maybe try heating the whole piece to a nice dull red. Then douse it in used motor oil. It might get it hard enough to resist some of those shots. If not it will at least protect the unshot parts from rusting.
