    Bronze Colored Dross

    Hello,

    I am new to casting. I acquired about 100 lbs of radiological lead from a guy who works in medical radiology. It's supposed to be pure lead. I get a bronze colored, metalic, dross when I melt this stuff. I can remelt the same batch several times and more appears. Onyone know what this might be?

    Thanks

    if it was/is in the form of isotope cores they are either 1/3/96 [big ones] or 2.5/2.5/95 [little ones]and what you are seeing is tin.
    if it was in the form of sheets or bricks it is most likely pure lead and you will see colors such as gold/blue/purple swirling in the melt.
    now if your ingots come out with a blue tint to them i'd say pure.
    if they come out bright shiney silver i'd say it was one of the other alloys.
    you can do the cement drop test also.
    tud= soft lead.
    ptink=alloyed.
    if the tests indicate alloyed that was the tin floating on top and needed to be fluxed back in.
