    2" Lead ball

    Not sure where to post this...
    Some years ago, my dad found a 2" lead ball that we thought was a cannon ball. It has a mould seam and measures about 1.95" around the seam and about2.06" opposite the seam. The ball was found in Eastern NC near the Tar River and there was Civil War activity in the area. The field it was found in is about 3.5 miles from the river. I'm trying to figure out just what it is and think it was either large Grapeshot(12lb gun?) or a solid projectile from the rare Woodruff gun(unlikely). Any Civil War buffs here? Thanks for any help,

    Most cannon shot was iron.
    Possibly a downrigger ball or net weight.

    I have a fishing weight ball mold for 2" that I use for casting balls for my canon, but I don't think it will shoot that far.

    Dixie sold moulds for lead cannnon balls for years before folks decided that was a big waste of lead and hard on the cannons to boot. I still have the mould but use roc crete now.
