If you're talking about the lead used to seal cast iron pipe, then yes it is as pure as anything that's available in most areas. You should be able to find it at any well stocked plumbing supply wholesaler.

Lead salvaged from old CI joints usually is pure but I've found some that had some alloy mixed in so I do a hardness test before I add it to my stash.

Thanks ky. A fellow I know has a few pounds. I think I'll get it. Use it for reference or to thin out some hard stuff.

All the plumbers scrap lead with a typical dull lead appearance is most likely almost pure lead.
All the plumbers scrap lead that has a shiny appearance is probably a plumbers solder wiped joint with a varying amount of tin. The amount of tin will vary with skill of the plumber and the position of the joint when wiped and the part of the joint itself. Still better than pure lead, but nothing to get really excited over.

I salvage all the lead from cast iron sewer pipe I come across in my construction business. A good whack with a sledge hammer breaks the cast iron and lets the lead peel out rather easily.

Most lead used in plumbing was pure lead unless it was used to wipe joints. If you drop pure lead on the cement floor it makes a dull thud. As hard lead [WW or lino type] make kind of a ringing sound.
