Can't find brass for Mosin Nagant

As the title implies I can't find any anywhere. I can find ammo up the ying yang but I can't shoot anything that attracts a magnet at my range so it's useless to me. If it doesn't have steel in the bullet it has it in the case. If I find cases that aren't steel they are berdan primed so I'm getting a little dismayed. I've never had this much trouble getting brass for anything that is as popular as 7.62x54R. Just when I see that I may have scored I click on the picture and it says they are out. What's a guy gotta do to get some brass???

I buy the loaded ammo from Grafs. The Hornady and Winchester sp should not have steel in them and they are boxer primed.

There's some on gunbroker. Grafs has Lapua but is out of their house brand. I agree, though- buy the loaded ammo, shoot it, save the brass. For some reason no one makes this in bulk.

It might be worth considering buying some of the inexpensive milsurp ball ammo and pulling and replacing the bullets with cast boolits over a lighter charge or jacketed bullets of the same weight as the originals.
Lots of folks would pay a fair price for the pulled bullets and help you recover part of your expense.
This practice was common a few years ago.

They are price proud of that LAPUA everywhere.

When I got my PP 7.62x54 from Graf, IIRC was 43 bucks a 100.

I just got a Mosin myself and was having the same problem. I got about 100pcs from the brass scrounger at our range. He collects all the brass from the boxes at every stall, sorts it, cleans it and sells it at the local gun shows. I don't mind buying from him since the price is half or less than new and the proceeds go to ammo for the local youth programs.

I am also dismayed that the 100 or so that I got were all he had! With as many of these things there are in circulation, where is all the brass? I guess everyone shoots the berdan stuff.

If I can’t find anymore by the time I need it I will probably just buy new prvi ammo and save the brass. At least it doesn't break the bank like some of the other alternatives.

Look for PRVI at cabelas.com. They have a price on 100 rnds and it comes in a free ammo box. I have a search saved on gunbroker that emails me hits. GB prices are usually more than retail though. I patiently waited until Grafs got Prvi brass in and bought a bag. Should have bought 4.

Thanks again. I managed to get a hold of Daryl at Ohio Guns and got some from him and Grafs must have got some non magnetic Prvi stuff just in as I ordered some loaded ammo from them as well as some dies last night. I'm not real big on buying factory ammo as I prefer to roll my own but I will buy some if that is the only way to get brass.

Have you considered reloading berdan cases? Right now the proper .217 7.62 nato berdan primers are available. I traded a guy for about 25 lbs of the albanian stuff last year (uses .217 primer) and I know he had lots more. Dan

Here are a few choices of Boxer primed brass ammo for you -

    http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/2SB33245-1.html

The last link starts with some .303 cal ammo. You need to scroll down near the bottom of the page to find the 7.62 x 54. The first two links have better prices.

Get Prvi Partizan brass anywhere you can find it. Most places sell out fast when they get it in, so you need to check often at several places until you find some in stock.

    It's very reloadable.

Be wary of any copper plated 7.62 X 54R cases also. The copper is just plating over steel, and they always have berdan primers.

I also used new Prvi Partizan brass (bought new, in the 100 pc bag) for my 303 Brit when I was having trouble finding a good supply of those.
