    .308 velocity

Yesterday I took my .308 Mauser out to the range. Wanted to test some CB loads. I had been shooting alot of the 170 Gr Lee boolits with 2400 and getting really good accuracy. A while back I got a NOE 311165 and had intended to get some loads worked up for that particular boolit. Just for giggles yesterday I loaded up 3 rounds of it with 18 Gr of 2400 and took them to the range with me. So between helping my Mrs. get her Winchester model 100 sighted in for deer, I was doing a bit of shooting myself. I shot those three 311165s and the group I got really surprised me. I could cover that 100 yd group with my thumb. I would really like to use this particular boolit for hogs and deer. My question is, has anyone chronographed this particular load? I am curious to see what the muzzle velocity is.

Haven't chronoed that boolit, but I'd be hesitant to use such a "pointy" boolit on deer. Maybe a shoulder shot but then again your deer run on the "small" side. No disrespect intended.

I think maybe you are confused a bit. This bullet is a flat nose with a HUGE meplat. Chances are it was designed for a 30-30, but works well in my .308
True about the deer where I hunt. Body size is small so I don't have to worry much about it not going all the way through. I'm just curious as to how fast it's travelling when it does go through.

    Armorer,,,
the #311165 does not appear on the lyman boolit chart , i notice you said NOE 311165, could this boolit be a variation of another design/ number?
rico are you thinking of the 311365 (198 grn)? it is "pointed"

    Gotta be this mold.

22 grains of 2400 should put a 165 grain bullet right about 2000 fps. I would guess 18 grains is going to put it 200-250 fps slower.

Yes sir! That is the one. That means I'm running right around 1750-1800 FPS right now. Good to go. That is one soft shooting, accurate load. As I get more time I intend to push the velocities up just a bit and see if my groups open up. For now I would think it would be just fine for North Texas whitetails and feral hogs. Thank you for the info!

OK. But this is the mold I have and the boolit I was talking about. http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com/...d.php?t=103163

If it's too pointy, I reckon I'll find out the hard way. Thanks for the input though.

Looks like a very close copy of the Lyman 31141 (iirc) designed over a hundred years ago for the thutty-thutty.

Anything that shoots thru a 30-30 will shoot thru a 308. Great blt for any 30 cal in my opinion.

Armorer, you should see approx. 1795 fps out of a 20" barrel and 1831 fps out of a 22" barrel in 308 Win. The flat nose on that bullet should work great for deer and pigs. My first cast boolit shot deer was with a 311041 hp out of a 308 at about 37 yards square in the shoulder and it dropped like a rock.

I've got a RD version of that with the PB option.... I got it for very light loads to carry in my truck with my FuglyRossi Breaker youth model....

if I can afford it, I'll toss my name in the GB for the NOE version at 314 and 316

I'd bet you'll never recover one from a deer. Put it through the heart area low between
the frt legs and you'll make meat.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.
