I've looked up white box and it's almost $1 a piece and probably will be after shipping. Which defeats the whole purpose of getting a mosin nagant I'm getting savage 110 in 30-06 but I wanted a cheap gun with cheap ammo that I can take camping without worrying about it.
But if it's going to be like this I'll just save my money.

Well I'm never one to not recommend casting or reloading for any firearm but boxer primed 54r brass is hard to find right now Graf & Sons sold all they had in a couple weeks after receiving there last shipment and it took a year to get that in.

Prvi Partizan,Wolf Gold same ammo different package as well as S & B,Winchester WB again same ammo different box are about all your options if you want reloadable brass at the moment http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index....oft-point-ammo

I guess you could always just pick up a few boxes of the non corrosive steel case Bear ammo to hold you over till the brass situation improves or you find some.

I think you have to accept the higher cost for some of the brass for the surplus rifles, in the end though, it's an acquisition cost, the brass fired with cast loads is going to last you a long time!!

I snagged one bag from grafs. Waited a long time for out. Should have got more. Before that, I bought the 100 rounds of prvi from cabelas. Came with a free dry box. Wasnt a bad price and didn't shoot too bad.

I try to go to the range on the weekends just to look for people shooting M/N,s, then ask if they reload. If the answer is no, I ask for the brass. Does'nt hurt to ask. Got quite a few that way.

might need to look at some small gun shops to see if they have any old box's that didn't sell .. might get a deal.. and look for estate sales too.

Unless you have some aversion to cleaning, the combination of Mosin Nagant and cheap Russian or Bulgarian surplus ammo is hard to beat. The entire corrosive primer issue is overblown in my opinion. Get some GI bore cleaner, or Balistol 1:10 with water, or a couple of cups of very hot water or some Windex, finish with Bore cleaner of choice and oil and done. It is not like some antique firearm worth mega bucks just a battle rifle designed 120 years ago that was made to be used by conscript soldiers with minimal training. If Mosins could not be used with corrosive ammo do you think we could buy them today for less than $100? This is a great weapon and very accurate. For less than $200 you could shoot in 11 CMP matches (rifle plus a 440 of ammo). At $0.20 per shot you might not be able to cast for less than that. More time shooting and less loading seems to be a good deal to me. Yes cast will be a lot easier on the shoulder, and it is really fun to cast and reload but take advantage of a cheap centerfire rifle and ammo while it lasts.

I got my new 7.62x54 Prvi Partisan brass from Graf and Sons for less than 50 bucks a hundred. It has proven to be good brass and I have no complaints at all with it.

But see they are currently out of stock.

Corrosive ammo is really no problem when fired, it is the residual primer salts left after firing which is the villain. Just clean like one would any black powder firearm, warm soapy (or plain) water is all that is required to dissolve and remove the salts.

If the bore is good on a decades old MN, it had likely been feed a steady diet of corrosive ammo for many years and survived in good order to date.

I recently went ahead and bought 100 rounds of Winchester for my newly acquired Mosin. Scheels was able to get them in and were $20/box of 20. I feel good about shooting my own new brass and the 100 rounds is getting me used to the rifle.

My next choice would have been to buy from the fella someone already mentioned in the S&S section here; $55/100 new brass doesn't seem all that bad.

You mentioned possibly bringing it camping? Not that I camp a lot, nor am all that familiar with many rifles, but the Mosin is quite heavy and quite long compared to new rifles I believe. It may not be all that comfortable or convenient to bring a Mosin camping. -Brad

    Potassium chlorate becomes potassium chloride

"Hang Fire" is exactly correct. The corrosive primers used potassium chlorate, which becomes potassium chloride after firing. It's a salt that dissolves and rinses right out with water. You then dry the bore and either coat with a good gun oil, or clean with a decent solvent and then oil. I've used corrosive ammo for over 20 years in one rifle with absolutely no bore damage. I rinsed out the salt as part of cleaning after shooting.

The British used hot water for more than brewing tea.

BTW, potassium chlorate is used on the heads of "strike anywhere" matches.

Heck - Cleaning up after using corrosive ammo saves me money!

The bore is already pretty clean after a quick scrubbing with soapy water, I hardly need to use any of my far more expensive Ed's Red afterwards.

Potassium chlorate is used in all matches. It provides the oxygen for the rest of the fuels in the match head to burn. It also reacts with the red phosphorus in the striker portion on the matchbook and helps the whole thing take fire.

    Reloading & casting 7.62x54r

I don't like the price of ammo in reloadable for this cartridge but, buy a box or 2 at a time until I get some together. So far, I have 2 boxes to fire and 25 somebody left at the range. Until then, I shoot surplus or the Silver Bear and Wlof brands. I will be using bullets I already make for 7.62X39 and 303 British to load that same cartridge. I use Lee CTL-312-160-2R for 7.62X39 but, it can be used on others including 303 British and 7.62X54R. My main cast bullet for 303 has been a Ranch Dog bullet, TLC-311-165-RF originally intended for 30-30 but, my mold drops them at 312.5 and I size them to 312 for 303 and 7.62X54R.

Shooting corrosive surplus is not bad, except on the shoulder. The last I bought was $69 per can of 440. It was about $20 for shipping a 2-can crate to the house.

There's no way I'm paying $10 or more per box for new brass when I can buy reloadable Privi ammo for $18.00 or less per box. Aim Surplus recently had 150 gr softpoint for $13.75 a box.

    Cast for Mosin

This is a timely thread thanks.
I just picked up an M39.
    Is Privi corrosive?
Silver bear is steel case right?
I am looking for a few Finn clips.
I will have to try the RD 165
