Hunting Ground Hogs with a 385,000 grain chunk of lead

I was working in the barn and heard a noise next to my lead

I sneak up and see dirt flying
Darn ground hog had dug in and was digging a 2 tunnel

No gun handy , but there was a 55 lb pig of pure lead on the bench right next to me

So as the ground hog backed out of the hole
I heaved the pig at it

Direct hit , dead ground hog

My velosity was limmited to my arm strength .....so maybe 30 or 40 FPS max
So that reduced the penatration to one corner only going in 1" or so

But even if only 30 FPS I hit him with 770 FPE
    More than enough

To turn him into Buzzerd food

    Nope

But Hornady AMax bullets out of the 50 BMG at 200 yards ......might be
Both produce a dead ground hog

But a 385,000 grain projectile leaves them in 1 piece
But it isn't as much fun

Groundhogs are tough critters. If they were the size of a bear you would need a cannon to kill them. I have taken 3 off my property. 2 with a 22rf HP (35yrds and 10yrds) Also one with a 17 HRM @35 yrds.Granted i live on a 1/4 acre lot( Be very quiet I'm hunting woodchucks") Have to be very stealth! use rifle and pistol

Yuup. One shot one kill. If I could gurantee a kill with every boolit, I would shoot something with a foot-trigger like a coastal battery piece. Hog hunting would never be the same again.
I came into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone elses blood. I plan to go out the same way.

I say that was an ineffective projectile....You didn't even get pass through....Did the lead mushroom at all?
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.

I could find no expansion at all
After washing the blood off , it looked like it was never used

If I get the chance , I will reuse it without recasting it

Does it have enough fpe to use on cape buffalo?

Up in the mountains we had them in the orchard and encroaching on the house foundation so we had to have them GONE.
(ground hogs, not cape buffalo. )

About a pound of 50/50 sugar/saltpeter smoke mix down the hole with a sandbag on top to seal it, and they still haven't come back eight years later.

    Johnch,

    Photographs, man!

Come on, Lets see some photographs of your groups!

With boolits that big do you still measure center to center?

Oh and do you Mag. or Standard primers?

    Keep em coming!

There are huge discussions about 45 gr bullets at 4200 fps vs 500 gr boolits at 1100 fps, or
    even a 250 gr at 800 fps.

This is about as far as you can go in the direction of "big and slow".

    Definitely "major caliber".

I guess you could say the ground hog died from "depression".

5 shots is better, and I like to put mine over the chronograph at the same time I shoot the groups.

Seems like the origional poster should be forth coming with groups size and velocities!

    Keep em coming!

    OK
If you want me to throw some groups
    I need help

First , I will need to use your cronograph
    Not going to risk mine
The best bet , I would just trash the sky screen
Worst .......... new croney time and hope they give you something for trade in on your flattened cronny

    Second
As I normaly shoot pistol groups at 50 feet or 25 yds and 100 yds
Shotgun at 40 yds and 100 yds
Rifle at 100 and 200 yds

Not exactly sure witch group a hand heaved pig of lead falls

    Even then
I am not able to get the projectile there in 1 heave

So not sure how to set up a spread sheet for distance / group / number of heaves
