I've used varget, H4895, ww748, 4064, 3031, and H380 in 308 win. Jacketed bullet weights from 125 grains to 168. None of these powders performed the best with all bullet weights. All have been shot in a 15" savage striker. If I had to pick just one varget would get the nod. I have heard nothing but good things about the VV powders but haven't tried any yet.

[QUOTE=southpaw;1304259 For the me with the 168 gr bullets they started to open up after 2500-2600fps. They still shot .75" at 2700fps at 100 yards, good for hunting but I like the little clover sized groups.

So, using your parameters, you would say a 300 Savage, 30Rem, or a 30-30Winchester aren't good enough for hunting?
a 170gr clover leaf at 2500fps MV will still be a VERY effective killer.
IMR 4895, 4064, Varget. They all work nicely. TAP ammo is loaded with Varget. I called Hornady and asked them. They told me Varget with a flash deterrent.

You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.
There is just so many good ones in this range.

Did I ever mention that I hate to trim brass?
I usually load match ammo with 4895 as ive not found any powder more accurate. If im loading progressive for the black guns i use 414 or 380
My Savage model 10 likes IMR 4895 at 2800FPS for the 168 gr HPBT

I shot 308s in HP competition for 20 years and used just about every medium speed powder at one time or another. However, for accuracy the best I tried with both 168 gr and 180 gr matchkings were in this order: AA2520, 3031, 4895, 4064 and Reloader15. I never used Varget but from what I read of it it should do just fine. I liked 2520 especially in an M1a with 168 gr MK. When I missed the X ring at 600 yards it was my fault not the load.
For cast, 2400 because it goes a long way, shoots accurately in my 308/s, and because I am cheap! 2400 is my go to powder for most of the rifles I shoot, along with 35-44 revolver ctgs. 1Shirt!

My sav 10 fple 2a is a bit too heavy to be a woods gun (scoped and loaded it is well over 12 pounds). I was playing around trying to reach out to 3-400 yards. Ended up spending most of my time shooting at 100 tho(call me lazy but it involved a lot less walking to get to the target). I realized that where I hunt a shot further than 300 yards is slim to none. Heck, 200 yard shots don't come around but every couple of years.
My nephew shot a doe at 250 yards with that gun with 165 sbt at 2500 fps. Ran in a cirlce and died.
What I was getting at is that the groups opened up for me at the higher end velocity and even tho they were a little bigger they were still plenty small for hunting.
There have been a few deer that have fallen to me and a 30-30. One of my favorite woods guns.

All I have used is Varget, 1/4'' @100yds with 168AMAX
Varget is insensitive to temperature as well, a plus for hunting in different weather
