Red Dot in the .44 mag

Folks: I've been given some Red Dot powder, and I'd like to use it up in my .44 mags with cast boolits, if it's suitable. Anyone care to share some data?

I use standard pressure 45 Colt data for the same weight bullet myself. Red Dot pressures peak pretty quickly, so I haven't tried getting maximum velocity from it. I only use it for plinking loads, but it should work well for lower end medium range loads.

Alliants web site lists a 240 gr. LSWC load using 6.5 grains of Red Dot with a CCI 300 primer at 905 FPS.
Not many published loads for Red Dot in a 44 Magnum...

Just load 4.5 to 5 grains and stuff any boolit weight you want into the case and go have fun.

Red Dot is just about as versital as unique.

I load H & G #503 , 250 Keith over 7.2 of Red Dot at around 1000 fps.Good midrange load.
Also load the 503S , 280 gr Keith over 5.5 Red Dot. Very mild shooting for a big boolit.

240 gr. lead, gas check, 8.8 grains, 1175 fps., 34900 psi
310 gr. LSWC, 5.8 grains, 885 fps, 34900 psi

Cowboy action loads
200 gr. RNFP, 4.4 grains 645 fps, 6.4 grains, 886 fps

6.0 grs. of Red Dot and the H&G 503 copy with CCI 300 keeps within 1 1/2 " @25 yards with my OMSB.

I use a 200 gr lee FP over 6.5 gr of red dot as a general plinking load in both my rifle and pistol.

Red Dot is my target load plinking powder in my old 3 screw SB in 44 Mag. I use 6.5 with a 240gr
swaged lead bullet from Speer, 6.5gr with my cast 429421 250gr Keith bullet, and 6.5gr with 44 caliber swaged lead balls loaded into the magnum case by pushing them in against the loading bench. I then smear a little alox lube around the ball for some mild lubrication. That lead ball cracks pretty good and sure is fun, though it shoots a wee bit high of aim. I tried less than 6.5gr of Red Dot with the lead ball but the primers kept backing out tying of the cylinder. 6.5gr was where the primers stopped backing out.

Since RedDot is a bit slower or the same as Bullseye in most rounds, you can use Bullseye data with RedDot.

6.5 gr with a 429421 works well in my Redhawk. I don't think it as accurate as your Green Dot load but it is very close.

6.5 grains of Red Dot with a RCBS 245 grain SWC works good in my Super Blackhawk. I have 26 lbs of Red Dot so am trying to apply it anywhere I can lately. One old Alliant manual shows 9.5 gr Red Dot with either 240 or 250 grain lead SWC for about 1,200 ft/sec. I need to try that one. Would sort of replace the load of 10 grains Unique I've been shooting as a mid-power load and I only have about 12 lbs of Unique.

I do not recall without looking the amount of red dot in my 44s but what I do know is that loading it caused me to start doing my inside flash hole debur to those cases.

Within a very short time I adopted the procedure to every single piece of brass casing of every caliber and cartridge I now load for.

Dirty burners become cleaner, fuel burned better. My charges are adapted to cases already improved.

I use it in .45 AR but it's not something I would likely use in .44 magnum. It can be used but if I want that level of power and velocity in a .44 I just shoot .44 Specials loaded with Unique or 2400 if I want to go faster.
