.429 bullet perfected!

I think I may have tried it all with the 44s. I'm sure I'll think up somthing new but I think I have reached perfection with the Look-a-Like notched 44 bullet (you know which one ). Ok.... I suppose I could perfect a Glaser.





Used my one step die and universial notch die to get it dang near exact. If the CH die was truncated it probably would be. Trimmed the rim of and it really completed the look. Notice the new function of the universial die? I added a punch option to round the tip of our bullets as much as we like. This really brings the notches together. It can also "roll" the jacket over on it's self for the lighter bullets where the jacket is to long. Works pretty slick! Think I may be able to duplicate a gold dot now too With the rim removed the bullet is 235 grains. I should have weighted it before but I'm sure it was around 250. Seems in past experiments removing the rim trims about 15 grains of weight.



As for a new challenge I thought what the heck lets turn a 9mm into a 44. Here we have a 225 grain 44 from a 9mm. This takes a core seat die and a cheater bar on a press but it turned out perfect.

Here is the 235 grain LAL bullet (think I may call it that?) commercial 240 grain XTP and 225 grain 44 from 9mm. Notice the 225 is the same size with the rim!

I'll load up some of the new 225 grainers in my 44 AMP someday and see what they can do. I can get the 240 XTP to 1400 FPS without even pushing the design limits of the gun. I bet the 225 would atleast do 1500 if not more. Should be pretty potent medicine!

I'm looking into die availblity. First ones I ordered didn't work as well as I would like. Going to try agian with a nother order this week. Sorry don't mean to tease you, well....ok maybe I do a little .

Spent some time on the lathe this weekend. The possibilities are pretty impressive.

Once I find a good quanity of the dies I want to use the avialblity will be soon there after. I'll keep you all posted. Goal is still to have it to your door by Chirstmas hopfully sooner.

That must be quite the die. Just kidding. I have plenty of the 44 cal one steps avialble at anytime. I am in the process of perfecting a universial notching die to make notches in the tip of the jacket for better and controled expansion as well as adding a personal touch to make a great looking bullet. This die as I said before will take a bullet allready formed in the one step die, or nearly any bullet for that matter, and notch the tip of the jacket. Then you reform it in the swage die a vola, a perfect XTP look a like bullet. Call it a "finishing touches" die or "multi purpose" die.

I have also used it for rounding the tip of our bullets to uniform the metplat or reduce the diameter of it a bit. As you can see it closes up the notched tip quite nicely. It can allso take a lead tipped bullet, possibly even a jacketed and depending on how much force we use form it into a RN. Or take the excess jacket of a bullet that is lighter weight then normal and roll the tip of the jacet over on it's self allowing us to reform the bullet with the jacket folding over the nose.

I still have a few possiblities to try out and some final design work. Initial results look very good as you can see above.

So lets break down the possiblities

1. work with any size bullet
2. notch jacket to form XTP look a like bullet
3. reform smaller metplat, better BC, better feeding
4. fold jacket over on it's self for lighter weight bullets without trimming jacket
5. possibily even work as a jacket or core reducing die

No deposite needed yet. I'm close and will start a list as soon as I have it all worked out. As it is with all my porducts I got to make sure it is going to be as close to perfect as I can get it before I sell it.

Not to worry I will keep you all posted. Probably even take more detailed before and after pics of all the possiblities to better show just what will be possible.

Is the cannelure necessary for a good heavy crimp?

On my BT .44 Mag bullets I found that I was having some crazy velocity swings due to not having a cannelure and the bullet pulling itself out of the case on recoil. I was using a Redding profile crimp that not only roll crimps but also taper crimps and it still did not work out well. I ended up getting a cannelure tool and solved the problem.

I use a old lee tapered crimp die W/O canalure. I have not had it over the chrono but groups are nice and tight.

Try the Lee factory crimp die. It is supposed to work very good even without a canalure. I use them for my .357 and .45 ACP and it works great, cheap too.

Brian, I just did some experimenting with my new chop saw trimming off the rims, and my one-step bullets lost an even 30grs. The 267gr (w/ slight lead tip exposed when using an untrimmed jacket) went down to 237grs, and the 250grs (which had a bit of jacket sticking out past the core) went down to 220grs. Of course, it depends on how much of the rim you trim off...

I can't wait to get the notching die!!

One question -- If I was going to buy a press just for swaging, what one do you think is the strongest?
