    S&w 29 ?

I have a friend that has a mod 29 with a 6 inch "pinned" barrel and wants to replace it with a 8 and 3/8 barrel. He contacted S&W and they said they dont have the barrel anymore.
Does anyone know where he might find a barrel ?

    Thanks
    Bob

I think he'd be better off selling his current gun for a lot of money, and buying a factory 8 3/8" barreled Model 629. I've got one, but it's not for sale.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply Fred.
I guess he was hoping maybe there was an aftermarket barrel or some one that might have a S&W barrel or know were he might find one.

Freds got the idea , Those guns tend to bring a little more . If the barrel he has is toast or he just wants to keep the gun you might contact someone who is deep into PPC shooting . I had a friend years ago who had a custom barrel put on a model ten for compitition . I bet it was expensive because it worked right and was scary accurate .

He can contact GPC, Gun parts Corp. They have a web site and see if they have a good used or take off barrel. they are the largest dealer in used gun parts. I have also seen custom bull barrels, full round or slab sided, installed on M-29 for a super accurate target or hunting gun.

The pinned barrels have been gone for a while. You might try Numrich Arms

If GLL can't help you out you may want to try an ad in the major gun sell/buy/trade websites.

Finding a good pinned barrel in 8 3/8 could be a challenge. There are occasionally some people who want to have shorter bbls to replace their 8 3/8 29's. If your barrel length is actually a 6 1/2" instead of a 6" you may find someone who wants to make their 29 an authentic replica of Dirty Harry's pinned and recessed 29-2. You may find a trade..... Just a thought....

Dirty Harry actually used a model 57 for filming.

Still being debated. No 29's were available at the time of the filming and an "N" frame whatever had to be assembled from parts. Many have concluded the barrel length of the pistol he used could be measured out to 6 1/2 inches and a lot of time has been spent researching that conclusion. There is no record of a 57 ever being made with a 6 1/2" barrel.

It doesn't matter what was actually used because the "legend" of the '29 was created around Harry's revolver being a Mod. 29-2 6 1/2 44mag. So much for "theatrical license."

The legend lives on and gets bigger every year..... but after all, it was just a movie...

Take a look on GunBroker; seems like I just saw one there within the past day or two.

No need for a pinned barrel, any S&W M-29 barrel will work and a pin groove can be added to the new barrel if desired
