Looks like the 374 punch should be close. Any thoughts?

    MiHec -
Thanks for clearing that up. Can you suggest an RCBS or Lyman top punch that will work correctly w/ this bullet?

    Thanks in advance - Gary

I lubricate bullets nose first with a Star lube/sizer and use a "universal" flat punch.

However, for any bullet that doesn't have a fitting nose punch, you can obtain a large punch and grease the bullet (or use some time of mould release after filling the hollow point on a sample bullet with heavy grease to keep the epoxy filler from entering it) then use epoxy in the cavity of the nose punch. Lower the punch to center the bullet (just have the bullet enter the die a third of the way) and hold it until the five minute epoxy sets. That will give you a perfect fit that shouldn't mark the bullets.

Of course, any of us who buy directly from Mihec (whether direct or from the Group Buys) have the benefit of the correct top punch being shipped with the moulds.

Dale, that's an excellent idea with the epoxy to custom fit a punch. I just moved to the Star sizers and find it's much easier than the Lyman style.

Sizing nose first , whether you use the Lee "push through" die after pan lubing or in the Star lube/sizer is a superior way to size a bullet. The bullets are self centering and you get no off center, unbalanced sizing which CAN happen with the Lyman or RCBS sizers. Understand, I have both the RCBS and Lyman sizers in addition to my Star and they can do good work, also - it just takes more attention to detail and they are considerably slower than the Star.

Star's were often furnished with fitted nose punches just like the others and people were expected to size base first. At some point in time, someone decided to try nose first sizing using a flat punch (allowing the bullets to self-center) and the rest is history.

Wait.... Doesn't Miha still supply a Top Punch with the molds????

I've become accustomed to receiving them.

Yes Mihec still supplies them (see Post #404. The original question is someone who was given some unsized samples from a Mihec mould. He doesn't have the top punch.

Hi all - as I posted before I ordered a .452 for my two Springfield 1911s and this will be my first foray into the wonderful world of boolits. Unfortunately, I have no experience with a bullet sizer and don't understand how it interacts with the mold and top punch enough to know what to get for compatibility. I've seen RCBS, Lyman, and Star mentioned - is there one you all lean toward?

    Many thanks.

    TastyCat,

With these bullets you'll have to at least lubricate them one way or another. If you want uniformity you may want to size the bullets to the correct size for your gun barrel.

May ways to lube the bullets either with a lubrisizer of some sort, Lyman, RCBS, Saeco, Lee push through and Star are a few options. All depends on how much you want to spend and your preferences. Go do some browsing in the Casting Equipment sections to read about the different options.

Lubrication can be applied during the sizing or they can be tumble lubed or pan lubed after sizing, or you can shoot as cast if that works for your guns.

There are simply so many variables involved with lubricating and sizing you should really do some research, then ask the questions that occur to you. Everyone has an opinion and knows what works for them. You'll have to explore it a little, enjoy the process. There's a LOT of great info here.

I'm happy to discuss the topics at length with you when you're ready.

    Cheers,

    TH

If money is not a problem, then for pistol bullets, the STAR has it all over any other method. You can lube/size bullets MUCH faster than RCBS or Lyman machines. Further, bevel base bullets can be a pain with the RCBS or Lyman tools and no problem whatsoever with the Star.

If money is REAL tight, then pan lubing THEN using a Lee Push-Through die is a viable method. If you use several 9" cake pans, production is much faster than you would think and the final product is equal to anything the faster machines can do. I have Star, Lyman, and RCBS lube/sizers and have pan lubed thousands of bullets, so have some experience with what I am talking about.

Keep in mind that a Star press will last you a couple of lifetimes (I've had mine over forty years and processed hundreds of thousands of bullets). If you think long term, it's a pretty easy conclusion.

Any chance I can be added to the list? I just discovered these molds and would rather have one of these than a Lyman or Lee

This will be a 4 cavity brass .45 HP mold at 200g with both round and penta-pins. This duplicates the early .45 2 cavity molds that Miha started with. This bullet feeds really well in everything, even XD's. It's proven to be very accurate as a .45 ACP and the mold casts well.

Please add your email address to the list, broken up so it can't be searched for on the site. Miha will give us a price when he gets it worked out, and a production schedule when he gets close. I'll try to find a couple of pics of this bullet to post soon.

Please forgive my ignorance and the fact that I've been away for awhile, are we now waiting to place an order and send in funds? I thought we were going to get an email telling us when and where to send funds.

I don't have Dale's experience. I can tell you this as a new owner of a Star luber/sizer, everything he says is true! It took all of 10 minutes with mine to agree with what he has said. They are made by Magma now and are a great machine.

Using them on bevel based boolits alone makes them worth it!

L1A1-- this is the critical part of what you quoted. What's supposed to happen is that a link will be posted here prompting us (when the mold maker is ready) to go to *his* web site and make the order official. This will be shortly before he's ready to start producing these molds. When the molds are ready to be shipped, he will email you a paypal invoice. I am fairly new here, but that's what I got from reading the thread and others on group buys for MiHec's molds.

    morme,

Unfortunately this buy is closed to any new orders. Miha used our list in post 1 to order pins and blocks for that number of molds. He sometimes will make some extras, you can PM him and ask if he'll have any to offer outside of the group buy. He usually does.

It's also possible that someone who is on the group buy will back out. You might post on this thread asking if anyone would like to give you their place on the list.

If not, keep an eye out for another run of this mold. There has been enough interest that I would expect we'll run it again.

I'm sorry that you missed the buy, it should be a nice mold.

If anyone has a question about the process I urge you to read post #197.

This buy happened pretty quick as far as these buys go. I started this last November, that's only a few months. If we start another it shouldn't take long.
