I lube with a paper collar around the outside base of the boolit. After taping the collar on, I pour melted lube in to a height of about 3/4". We peel the collar just before loading. I use 1 part beeswax to 4 parts Crisco by volume. I just started experimenting with TrackLube Plus in other blackpowder guns and may try adding some to the cannon lube. (TrackLube Plus is almost identical to FrogLube for those wondering)
