New front mount for a Malcolm scope

For some time now I have been wanting to put a scope on my Uberti High wall. I already bought an 18" Malcolm scope of the right "vintage look", but while the scope is fine, the mounts leaves much to be desired - especially the front mount which can best be described as a piece of junk. Thinking I could do better I came up with a design using a spherical fastening ring - an idea I gladly admit I stole from SAKO's excellent mounts. http://www.sako.fi/optilockproducts.php?ringmounts

This ring allows the scope to rotate freely in all directions up to about five degrees from the centerline. Once the scope is sighted in, tightening the screws will lock it securely in place.






In the last picture the mount is shown together with the original tilted to max elevation.

So far I haven't drilled & tapped the rifle for the mounts yet. I'm still contemplating whether I should use the original rear mount or bite the (boolit) and make a new one with some sort of ladder long range adjustment.

The insert ......Plastic or AL or ?

Yes, the insert is plastic. It has enough 'spring' to snap over the scope body without permanent stretching, and it seems to give a much better grip than steel against steel. The idea was to have a mount that could be removed without removing the front bell of the scope. The manufacturer claims the scope is nitrogen filled, and I would like it to remain so.

If the interest is there I might do so. So far it's only a prototype, and it remains to be seen what happens after a bunch of 540 grainers has been put through the rifle. It has one of those curved steel butt plates, so I already know what it will do to my shoulder...


I made a new flat base to use with the original rear mount. Instead of clamping the base from the side, I dumped the original screw, and put a 6mm set screw in the base plate instead. This screw forces the base and mount apart from each other, and puts pressure on the dovetail, removing all slack. Only problem is that the scope must be removed from the mount before the mount/base unit can be installed or removed. This is not too big a problem as the inner diameter of the rear mount is large enough that the front bell of the scope can pass through.
