Question How Much Lube to Order?

Star's on the way, dies are ordered from LatheSmith, guess I need some Lube.

I was going to order some Carnuba Red (lots of high temps in Nevada), and wasn't sure how much to get. How long does a stick last?

Garage gets up to high 80s in July/Aug, do I need to keep it in the garage fridge?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Can I suggest you get a little bit of several lubes, and see what you like & don't like?

I've always liked 50/50 lube, but I don't mind smoke since most of my shooting is outdoors. It gives me excellent accuracy, even up at 2200 fps.

I've experimented with various RCBS and Lyman lubes, and I'm going to make up a bunch of Speed Green from the Bullshop soon. Still, I like 50/50.

My shed is shaded, but not air conditioned yet. The various WHITE LABEL lubes do fine. I just wish LARS will be making the black powder lube again...works great in my 50/90 SHILOH SHARPS...just needs a better shooter behind the gun.

I usually order a dozen sticks minimum...check out the shipping price and adjust the number you order...they don't eat and I've used some 50/50 blend sticks from GAR....good folks now out of business...that I discovered in a drawer that are easily 10 years old....found some of their rifle blend also.

50/50 is good; B-A-C and 2500 also. I have a few sticks of Carnuba to try and will be ordering in the near future. When you shoot 40+ rounds of 357/44 daily, you use some lube.

A serious pistol shooter needs 4+ cavity moulds, a STAR lubri-sizer and a DILLON 550B (or other progressive machine.) LARS makes d*** good lube at a great price. I'll continue to be a repeat customer.

When I was using the White Label lube I ordered 10 tubes of each type. I was loading 38spl. and 45 acp for afriend. I would also order 10 tubes of the BP lube. Glenn has not made any BP lube in at least 2 years. I purchased the last 10 he had. I still have 4 of those tubes as I started making my own. I have shot my lube with SPG and have yet to see that much of a difference. My shop was 105 just the other day and no lube problem with any that was stored there. That included mine BAC,Carnuba Red, 50/50 and the BP lube.

I get get about 1000 single groove 45acp per tube Carnuba Red. They stay within the 10 ring at 50 yards. 185 gr. Federal Match groups about 1/2 the size. I am very pleased with CR and the service from White Label.

Thanks for inputs, I won't worry about storing them on a shelf in the garage. Well, not too much.

Just what I needed - never sized a boolit in my life, but the bulk of my shooting is .44/.45 with some .32/.357 tossed in. Wasn't sure how quick it went, 1000 is actually about twice my guesstimate.

Guess I'll buy enough to max out an envelope for starters.

I do have another question though, if I did get a couple different types of lube, it seems as if it would be a major PITA to switch from one to another. For those of you that do it, what's the trick?

I dunno. I just used up what I had and added the new lube stick. Got some interesting blends that way, but after a while they all evened out.

i havent owned a star but the answer will depend , if u wish to try a diff lube entirely then u have to clean out the machine, in my lyman's and rcbs's that meant heating or boiling the old lube out ,for the most part a lil mix usually doesnt hurt if using for the same application anyways , i keep the 3 sizers i have now full of different lubes split into categories ie; low velocity medium velocity and hi velocity , one could interchange or add hard lube, medium lube or soft lube to that btw, if ur testing for different lubes a heat gun or hair drier applied to the base should get the lube hot enough to melt mostly out ,remove o-rings etc before doing so ( especially if boiling )
as for my original answer above, my humble apologies amigo as i wasnt aware that u had never used a lubrasizer before but the gist is still the same ,it depends upon the grooves and whether the stick is solid or hollow ( solid has a few more boolits in it ) i also tend to go with ur original estimation as it's better to have too much lube in stock than not enough ! and i agree max out the shipping !!!

No worries fry-boy. I would like to try out some different lubes, but I'm thinking its probably best to keep it simple for little while. Besides, if I buy any more equipment for casting this month, I'm going to need to check into a clinic.

I agree, order some BAC & CR & see which you like best. The CR needs heat, the BAC not. Both shoot well. Depending on bullet size & number of grooves, 600-1200 bullets per stick.

I like the CR but I use heat for both my Star and Lyman sizers. Get a max shipping quantity, you'll use them up and they don't go bad.

I am using a mix of Carnuba Red and BAC in my Star and it requires no heat. I JUST got the Star and am doing it as a test. Prior to that I was pan lubing Carnuba Red.

I use BAC and Speed Green, but have now set up a luber with Carnuba Red which requires a little heat. I also like to use a little heat on the other two so that they flow easier. Load up an envelope and enjoy Lar's excellent lube at the best price anywhere.

Ordered 14 tubes of the CR - guess that's what'll fit in a envelope.

Good show! You will be pleased! Lar's lubes are excellent! You will need a little heat for it. Good luck, and let us know what you think of the Star and the CR.

Will do - I ordered the heater with the sizer, and the Dies are in the mail (thx Chris).

Hopefully everything will arrive this week and I'll be able to try it out.

Just deciding where to mount it, its actually smaller than I thought it would be. Thinking a 1x6 long on either end to clamp it to the bench for now should work. Long term I'd like one of the docking stations Pat sells, seems like a great idea.

If you can get someone to weld you some scrap angle, this worked well for my Star.
