    True, that's one of the benefits of the 99's 26" barrel.

    Tell me it isn't really a K31 converted to 30-30. I just saw a 1911? SR converted to 308W today, and I doubt that action is as strong as the K31.

    Someone just posted load data and pictures for 1911 SR 7.5x55. Rifles earlier than the K31 had longer actions.

    If you look through old (1950's) American Rifleman mags you'll see adds for S+R in 30-30. Lots of them. I think they were usually the 96/11. I handled a K-31 308, might have bought it but the shop owner thought it was made of gold.

    1950s, eh? K31s saw service until 1958, so more than likely the ads you saw were for the earlier rifles. Converted to 30-30 might have made them more saleable here in the US or Canada. The 7.5x55 seems to take the same shell holder as the 30-30. Interestingly, the K31 has no problem with the smaller, rebated rim 284 Win case necked up to 30cal.

    I dunno how strong the earlier action was, but would certainly trust it in 30-30. I don't think the K31 (karabiner) to be a lightweight, so the earlier, longer action would surely be heavy, particularly with a longish barrel.

    I had bought a single cavity Lyman 311290 off the Swappin & Selling threads, that had been bored to cast a plain base boolit.

    the day that it came I cast a few out of a 50:50 alloy of wheel weights and pure lead. sized to .311 with a NRA alox lube.

    with a SWAG applied load as follows…

    30-30 DWM brass;
    WLP primer;
    13.0 grains SR4759
    2.810 oal
    311290 at .311 and 207 grains plain base, '8' BHN

    H&R 30-30 Handi-Rifle, 1-4X scope

    5 rounds into about 3½" at 50 yards

    when the first shot cracked off I knew it was gona leave some skid marks.

    these were a lot hotter than what I hoped for. I had thought that it would be about 1400 fps…with the way that it 'cracked' I think it was closer to 1700 fps. most of the leading pushed out with a tight patch

    so, If anybody’s got a better SWAG on a 200 grainer at about 1350 fps, I’m all ears.

    I followed excess650’s suggestion and loaded 5 rounds with Herco, thusly…

    30-30 DWM brass;
    WLP primer;
    8.0 grains Herco
    2.810 oal
    311290 at .311 and 207 grains-plain base, '8' BHN

    boolits cast of 50:50 alloy WWb air cooled.

    H&R 30-30 Handi-Rifle, 1¾-5X scope

    5 rounds into about 2" at 50 yards

    each shot was nice and smooth as it fired. no crack, minimal recoil.

    these were a lot better than what I had loaded at first. what little leading there was, pushed out with a tight patch

    next I’m going to load 7 and then 7½ grains Herco, looking to tighten the group. maybe try some of wax gas-checks to diminish the leading to nothing.

    I shot the 314299 sized to .309" weight 200grs, 22grs 5744, vel. 1,830fps out of my Contender 21" 30-30 carbine. Groups size was 1.083" for 3 shots.

    May carry this for cow elk this fall. Might try to make some softnose boolits for the hunt.
