    Shoulder Pain

Hello, Here is something for you guys to think about: Two rifles, both 26" barrels. One a .22 Hornet, The other .222 Rem. Bullet for Hornet, 55gr. g.c., Bullet for .222, 58-60gr. g.c. Hornet charge: 7.0grs., .222 charge 10.0grs.
With the Hornet, only ear plugs are needed. With .222 I MUST wear muffs. Only 3.0gr. difference in powder charge! I'm thinking it must be the 30' shoulder on .222 case vs. 5' or so of Hornet, holding back gas to increase pressure. Any thoughts on this? Best of luck!

Difference in velocity? Sonic "crack" at breaking sound barrier?

The shoulder of the case probably has something to do with it but the powder charge increase is more than 40 percent this would increase the gas volume and pressure so an increase in noise would result. Just my worthless 2 cents worth and someone will probably come along and prove me wrong....Wes
The problem in America today is, there are to many fools making to many rules that don't apply to themselves. Now just wait until the new pres. takes office and see what happens!!!!!

Strange....ear plugs have more noise attenuation than most muffs.

The hornet has a small case, the powder burns quickly and efficiently so that muzzle pressure is low, wheras with the 222, the larger case volume keeps pressure down so the powder burns slower and longer, resulting in higher muzzle pressure. The case and bore volume is also larger so the 'size' of the muzzle blast is greater too.

The way I use ear plugs, they are nowhere near as effective as earmuffs.

    Roger that.

Using a dacron fill will get your peak pressures up, and your muzzle pressures down.

Well, from 7 to 10 grains is about a 40% increase in powder...

I believe THAT is what is causing the Big BOOM...

Echo is right. That 40% extra and at a lower chamber pressure will indeed account for the greatly increased 'boom'! (Dang - 3grs more seems so little!)
