So . . . anybody else actually load these up and shoot them?

I just got a Marlin 1894 and Ruger Alaskan ordered . . . gotta get these cast up and loaded . . . can I just use 240gr loading specs?

What are you using for powder?

I have Blue Dot, 2400, Trail Boss . . . some other faster ones like Bullseye, Tight group . . .

I have loaded a considerable number of them with the large pentagonal shaped pin with the "Skeeter" load, 7.5 grs of Unique. I haven't yet tested them for expansion, but will do so when the "stars and planets are aligned"...

The short answer to your question, is YES, you load them with 240 gr data. You can just use Lyman data for the 429421 bullet and be VERY close to correct.

If you are loading to .44 Magnum ballistics, you might be better off with the smaller hollow point pin. Further, I tailor my alloy to the velocity expected.

For .44 Special velocities (750-1200 fps) I use WW's/soft lead 50/50 + 2% tin for castibility and malleability.

    For .44 Magnum velocities (1200-1400 fps) I use WW's/soft lead 80/20 + 2% tin.

Those alloy choices should give you bullets that expand well but also hold together for proper penetration.

OK, great, I'm hoping to cast up some on my lunch break (I work a split shift and get 1.5 hrs!)

I'm planning on starting light, so I'll be starting w/mag brass, but gonna load to Special specs till I get my Alaskan figured out!

I just picked it up at Sportsmans warehouse last night, and plan on only shooting cast through it!

    Cast up a few

Once I got the mold up to temp, and the lead right, I got these, looks like I need to be a tad more patient, and alot of the hollow points are deformed, but, I'm gonna load these up, I don't expect great accuracy out of a new gun I have never shot before!

There 50/50 wheel weight & recovered range lead, plus some tin . . . (I just threw in a hunk, never used it before) Gonna probably try Trailboss for powder . . .

I got mine in the mail today too.

I didn't even clean it, I just put the pins in heated the pot and started casting. About 10 fills later I was getting keepers, so I cast up a pile of them. Couldn't stand it so I sized and loaded some too.

    and the loaded ammo

I'm very impressed with the mould.

I'll test a few for accuracy, but suspect it will be good.

Now there's a groundhog around here, let's see if he'll cooperate for the expansion testing.

    I tried these today . . .

I loaded up just five of each:
    5.5gr of TrailBoss
    7.0gr of TrailBoss
    15.0gr of BlueDot
    19.0gr of 2400
All with new Star Line brass, Win WLP primers, and lubed with a mixture Dale gave me . . . 50% Beeswax, 40% Crisco, 10% Canola oil (I think it was called Emerts?) I got a new computer, and seemed to loose the directions he sent me to teach me how to pan lube!

I shot them into my target trap, half expecting the two last batches to blow out the back of the trap which has 16" of shreded rubber then 1/8" steel and 1.5" of sand in front of 1/2" plywood . . . none of them made through the 16" of rubber!

    Left to Right - 158gr Lee TL SWC ALOX/JPW/Min Sp Lube with 10.0gr 2400 - 153gr RCBS 38-148 WCDE same lube with 5.5gr BlueDot - 451 RB from 44 C&B 30gr Eq Pyrodex, the 357's were found about 8"-12" in, the 38's & 44 were about 5" - 8" in, just for comparison!

    L to R - MiHec's H&G 503 Lg HP w/ 15gr BlueDot (found about 8"-12" in) - Pentagon & 5.5gr TrailBoss (found 5"-8" in):

    Another angle:

    L to R - MiHec's H&G 503 Pentagon w/19gr 2400 (found 8"-12" in) - 3 Pentagon & 1 Lg HP w/ 7.0gr TrailBoss (found 5"-8" in):

    Close Up:

    That will hurt!

Thanks for the photo report - that add's a LOT of impact (the report, the report - dern, I mean your PHOTO report). Talk about double entendre! Do you get it?
Report (gun makes a bang)? Hollow point makes a lot of IMPACT?

One suggestion - we are left wondering which case you shot these loads in (.44 Special or .44 Magnum, ???). It is ALWAYS helpful to list the case before you list the load so someone doesn't "assume" the wrong thing. You showed a .44 Magnum Alaskan but I don't really know what case you used.

It is apparent that the alloy that you used is malleable at the velocities you shot it at. It held together nicely in that very tough media. Next thing, it would be nice to see the accuracy results. I may be able to do that, myself, shortly but it would be helpful to others to see what your experience is.

At any rate, thank you. It looks like it'll be a while before I can do some expansion tests, myself.

    Dale,

I used New Star Line 44 Mag brass, and I think I lied earlier about the lead composition . . . I woke up this morning, and remembered that it was old 38 WC's that I re-melted, which were 75-80% WW with a bit of tin (maybe 1%?)

My Acuracy left much to be desired, but here is my best target! I'm not the best shot, and I never shot a 44 mag before . . . 10 yards two hands, from a new gun . . . I basically just went out to see if this new gun was gonna break my little wrists (I have big hands but small wrists) or if the recoil would bounce it off my forehead! With more shooting, and a rest, I'm sure the gun and boolit will do much better!

The 19gr of 2400 were not really sticky to get out of the cylinder, but they seemed to drag more than the others (which just fell out!) I had to actually just grab them with a light touch, they did not come out hard. These also seemed to recoil the most, about 14"-16" up and the gun ended up at about 10 O'clock position, not sure if that is a shooter problem, or a result of the rifling putting a twist on me who is not use to this kind of power.

I was surprised to see that the hotter 44 mags (which were not max loads) did not penatrate any further than the 357 mags, but I was told that it is more a velocity thing than mass thing with this shredded rubber stuff . . .

    I hope this helps . . .

    Edit to add:
I loaded these as cast, about .4325, (I don't have a sizer yet!) my cylinders are about .4321, and bore is .4295, These were air cooled, also.

The Petagons were actually cast at 242gr, the one on the last photo on the left weighs 238gr as pictured, so I lost 4grs!

A short barrel is not the best platform to learn how to shoot the .44 Magnum. In fact, it's much greater felt recoil than a long barrel may actually be detrimental.

If I were asked, and I was NOT asked, the best learning platform is a longer barreled .44 Magnum. I am talking 6"- 8 3/8" when I say long barreled. The longer barrel has MUCH less upward "whip" when fired. The heavier handguns recoil less (the longer the barrel, the heavier, of course). A handgun with a scope (which, of course, adds weight) also helps tame the recoil.

The .44 magnum and heavier caliber handguns are, by no means, easy to learn to shoot. Most prefer to start with lighter loads, master them, then move up gradually until you are shooting full loads. It takes a LOT of shooting to become competent. That is where I believe it is mandatory that you cast your own bullets and reload. Obviously, you are on your way.

Yeah, the light loads with the TrailBoss were fine, I'll move on up, but I just wanted to see what some more power felt like!

    123.DieselBenz:

I really like your photo report! I always like to recover boolits for examination.

I dig through target berms and shoot into snow to recover boolits. I like to see if there is gas cutting, base deformation , boolit collapse, skidding, etc. The best is when I go out to the range in the spring after the snow melts. I can often find the boolits I shot in the winter virtually undamaged though obviously if I have shot different loads under the same boolit I can't tell which is which.

I have just made a portable expansion tester which I hope will also catch the boolits after expansion. I have used it in a fashion and it was sort of successful (it did catch H&G 503's) but rather messy (Dale knows all about that!). I have changed things around so I am using water and a catch tube with rags. I have not had time to try it yet though... SOON!

Anyway, great post and I really like the photos.

I'm working on some water tanks, actually old vegetable oil totes that are 5 gal square base . . ., figure I can put them end to end, should need less of them, and they may not blow up as much as a milk jug, but should still get them stopped, and that is what I have a bunch of!

I'm also thinking of trying to build a trap to recycle my lead with sand . . ., my rubber works OK, but is bulky and heavy . . . sand should just be heavy!

I'm still new at this, and have to learn more about reading the signs, and what they mean.

DAF: I knew they would do better than I was shooting! I mostly was just out to make my gun go bang!

    Talking Made more noise!

Well I went back out this morning, I had reloaded a few different loads, these did the best, I wish I had brought my screwdriver with me to adjust the sights on this new gun!

    New Starline 44 Mag
    Win WLP
    11.0 gr BlueDot
    246gr Lg HP
    loobed with Emmerts:

This time I sat down next to my car, and leaned back against the tire/wheel, resting the gun butt on my knee covered with a insulated work glove, shot at 15 yards, I'm getting happier, the more I shoot this new Ruger SRH Alaskan 2.5" gun!

I took new reloads out last Saturday . . . and shot the same loads through my 2.5" Ruger SRH Alaskan, and my new to me pre-safety Marlin 1894 20" micro groove bbl . . .

    The load was:
1X fired Starline Brass in 44 Mag
    11.0 grains BlueDot
    Win WLP primer
H&G Copy w/ Pentagon HP (about 70% ww and about 30% recovered range lead, with about 1% tin - aircooled)
    Emmerts loob

Even though the Marlin did not feed these really well, and this was my first outing with this rifle . . . I shot the Marlin from 25 yards kneeling, and the Ruger at 15 yards sitting with gun on my knee. The Ruger shot about the same as last time, but I adjusted the sights!

Here is a picture of the target from the Marlin:

But what I really found interesting was the recovered boolits!

The difference of 17.5" inches of barrel made a HUGE difference in how these mushroomed! I also afterwards shot some 7.62X39 out of my new AK 47's into the rubber trap, and when those 124gr fmj's hit the cast, it would shatter the cast ones . . . and mangle the fmj!

Top row from Ruger, middle from Marlin, bottom row is pieces that got hit by other rounds:

Different angles, all the same actual subjects:

I still hope to shoot them into water . . . these are relatively light loads, but hot special loads. I really need to invest in a chrono . . .

    Talking Water Test!

    So I loaded up some more . . .
    The load was:
2X fired Starline Brass in 44 Mag
    11.1 grains BlueDot
    Win WLP primer
H&G Copy w/ Pentagon HP (about 70% ww and about 30% recovered range lead, with about 1% tin - aircooled)
    Emmerts loob

Shot out of my Marlin 1894 20" Micro Groove Barrel

I lined up end to end two 5 gal plastic oil jugs filled with water, they are 13.5" long (not including the handles & lids) So 27" of water . . .

At the end you see me reach down and pick up the base of the boolit which had passed all the way through the second jug, and was laying about one foot passed . . .

    15 yards:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSGUU1z_BLA

Here is what I recovered from the water:

The mushroom on the right is recovered from the rubber boolit trap, the left is all I could find from the water trap . . .

The boolit fragmented in the first jug, and only the base went through the second jug:
    In:

    Out:

Isn't anybody eles out shooting these? You don't have to worry about wearing out this mold . . . I'm sure there are lots of you that are better shots than me!

Here my wife was a tad slow on her trigger finger on the video . . . my first shot only shattered the first edge of the cement block, you see the pieces falling, and then the second shot, I was not able to recover any of the lead from those two shots . . . these are really wimpy magnum loads. . . . It is quite windy . . .

I'm loading and shooting but ain't got a cooperative spouse that wants to video the action and am rather lazy about photographing the results. Be grateful that you have such a 'better half'.
I've been suffering from tendonitus for a couple of months now and have been to a couple of doctors about it and they have still failed to resolve the problem. The specialist is talking about operating therefore any shooting that I'm doing is limited to very soft recoil. When I get back to normal, I'd like to see what this baby would do in a magnum velocity, #2 alloy.
I'm living vicariously through you guys that are doing it right, so please, keep'em coming.

Here is my "better half" (She just got this Marlin 1894C 357 mag, and I need to shorten the stock) But if she goes with me I let her shoot all she wants!

I took my SRH in 44mag and some loaded boolits with 10gr of unique and the Mihec cast star HP's and the round HP's. Shot them at 50 yds. Good enough!
