I teach shop skills to young adults slightly older than your grandson. Despite their (and my) best efforts things happen - tools get broken, parts get dropped, etc. My only rule is that they must tell me so that I can replace the tool or help them fix their parts.
I don't expect them to be perfect. I'm not and neither are they. I want them to be responsible, stand-up people.
Material objects can be replaced, relationships are a **** of a lot more important and sometimes more fragile. If your grandson is a responsible young man as your post indicates then take joy in that.
I'd chuck every gun and mold I own in a bottomless pit to have my grandparents back for one day.
