    50 cal. Sabots

I had a thought (rarely a good thing) about the possibility of using a 50 cal sabot in a 500 Mag or 50 AK. I remember when Remington made their accelerator line of boolits but was wondering if it would be possible and the potential accuracy of this combination. I have an old NEI 300gr/430" boolit mould and was thinking of casting booits out of pure lead.

Just curious to see if anyone else has tried this and if so what the end result was.

stubshaft, I've used .50cal.sabots with Ly. #429421 and RCBS 44-250-K in an inline rifle and found them to be quite accurate. Your application is a bit different, but the sabots I used were MMP high pressure ones. Here's their website, http://mmpsabots.com, if you'd like to see more.

maadi griffin did carry sabots for the 50bmg that used .30 cal bullets but it looks like they are no longer in business. IIRC the load data sent a 180 grain out at over 5000 fps.

My buddy once had some sabots for shooting 357 bullets in the 500 and 475 linebaughs. They arent made anymore. He said he got some unbelievable velocitys but never did find a really accurate load. These sabots looked more like the excellerator sabot then a muzzle loading sabot. My guess is a muzzle loading sabot is to thin to stand up to being shot through a forcing cone and probably wouldnt do well if you crimped on it.
