By the way, any idea if this heavyweight will fit in a .38 S&W case and still chamber in my S&W 32-1's and 33-1's?
Hopefully so, but I'll still stick it into the front of 38SPL cases, tooYou just gotta love a bullet that goes thru 6 water-filled milk jugs, w/o deviating in flight path, and buries itself to the shoulder in a 2x12. All from a 2" snubbie at the blinding velocity of 718fps over my chrono. This slug will carry thru whatever you're liable to shoot with it.
how about a bigger meplat and 2 crimping grooves.

Im thinking about this bullet very hard.... but first, a question for you guys: at what velocity would you consider a GC necessary for this bullet? I would like to shoot this one in a PB configuration, and am shooting it in 357 Maximum, both in a 12" Contender and 8" DW. My load now is 20grns H4227 under Hornady's 180XTP. I wanted to maintain about the same level of power switching to this bullet. (As the 180XTPs are impossible to find). Any help would be appreciated.
I shoot so that I can handload.

I'm not one-tenth as experienced as most of the guys here, but I'll offer what I can from what I've read.
Seems like most bullets start to need gas checks--on average--as you get above about 1400fps. From everything I've read, however, that's all highly dependent on the hardness of your alloy, accuracy of fit between the bullet and the bores of your guns, smoothness of your bore, and some of the burning characteristics of your powders in conjunction with the characteristics of your lube. I've read posts from a number of knowledgeable shooters whose bore-bullet-alloy-powder-lube combinations were optimum, and they shot far higher vels without gas checks.
What all that means to me. . .as someone whose ability to optimize all of those factors is limited, I would need to use gas checks at relatively lower vels unless I just got lucky. If you need to ask, you're probably in my category

As for the 200 grain SWC: I use the 200 grain Lyman 358430 for IDPA, mostly in .38 Special brass, to make both minor and major at low velocities. In addition to that, I think the 200 grain weight has applications for defensive use, but in that case, a SWC profile is much more in line with what I would want, as opposed to the Lyman RN. I'm also interested in trying the heavyweight bullet in real magnum form on whitetail next season, probably out of a Blackhawk or similar revolver, or perhaps out of a Marlin carbine (if I find the money for one before November). Plus, I'm a big fan of heavy for caliber bullets, and the 200 grain SWC seems a natural extension of that. I've found the 358430 to shoot quite nicely and accurately in my S&W revolvers. I don't see any reason the same wouldn't be true of the SWC profile bullet.

Thanks guys, how long do you think before they can start casting, handloading, and shooting?
Another question, how long before I can start doing it again? I haven't casted boolit one since they were born in October, and I've only loaded a handful of rounds for deer season. Even then I was so busy I didn't make it out until the last two days and I didn't see a single one. Oh well, next season I suppose.
But, I'm not complaining, a man can hardly complain about having two sons in one fell swoop!

Advice of one Dad to another:
1. Build a portable reloading bench and place it in the boys' room. That will accustom them to the smell of powder, while boosting your ammo output.
2. I'll email you a photo of the gun cleaning platform that I clamp on top of my B&D Workmate. Place that in the twins' room & get them used to the smell of solvent and oil as you work over the Arsenal of Democracy.
3. Justify this to your wife as (a) increasing your babysitting time; (b) male bonding; (c) saving on furniture & decorating costs for the nursery.
4. If #3 is a resounding success, you may be able to get another gun, mold, or batch of components with the proceeds.
5. If you live outside of the city limits, load up a rifle and watch for deer out the window.
