Swedish Mauser bolt modifications - shorten lock time

These photos are of a standard issue m/1896 Swedish Mauser firing pin, bolt sleeve and cocking piece..... and... a Carl Gustaf m/63 target rifle firing pin, bolt sleeve and cocking piece.

You'll notice the thumb piece has been removed from the CG63 part. You'll also note the cocking piece has been modified as to the location of the sear engagement and safety engagement slot on the top.

The reason for this modification was to decrease lock time. The later Carl Gustaf m/80 (CG80) target rifle has an even shorter lock time and distance due to a more radically shortened cocking piece.







These photos below show a CG80 cocking piece next to standard military m/96 parts.

You can see the surfaces of the cocking piece have been reduced in cross section to reduce frictional resistance in the trigger pull. The CG63 has a standard face to the cocking piece so the CG80 presented an improvement over the CG63 in addition to the shorter lock time.

These modifications can be done to any Mauser, especially any m/1893, m/1894, m/1895 Mauser military action used for hunting or target shooting.

Both the CG63 and especially the CG80 are capable of sub-1/2 moa. Clunky old Mauser action with a good barrel and a good stock.

I cut mine down like the CG80 and completely removed the thumb piece from the back of the cocking piece and shortened the bolt shroud on an original 96 Swede. I replaced the trigger with a Dayton Trister with a thumb safety and it's worked flawless for over 20 years. I'd REALLY like to get my hands on another good 96 to build on! If you don't have magnumitis it's a good action, easily modified, and makes a good basis for a fine rifle.
