Surplus 30-06 powder

Years ago I used Surplus 30-06 powder perchased from River Valley Ordnance.
They no longer sell this and I am down to my last six pounds of WC852 from
GI Brass. Was this RVO surplus powder the same as WC852? Jaff Barlett says
there will be no more surplus WC852. What surplus powder available today
would be about right to duplicate GI loads?

Surplus 4895. You can't get any "righter" than that.

RVO's "Surplus .30-06" was a great powder, but not cast bullet friendly at all. Using a Lee Loader and Surplus .30-06, but with a larger dipper than the original, I once put 10 jacketed bullets into a nickel-sized circle @ 100yds. (witnessed) from my .243Win. (Ruger #1). All rounds were loaded at the range and with the dipper, not a scale, to throw charges. Too bad that powder's now history.

I bought 8 pounds of that stuff also.

It was one of my first ventures into Milsurp Powder.

Does pretty decent with coated bullets, I did not ever find a super good load, but it did ok with everything I tried it in.

Not much I need in milsurp unless I could get another 8 pounds of OLD SLOW 820!

While not a surplus powder, per se, It is priced right, at $60/8lb. A bud and I just ordered four jugs of their Data Powder #86. Here's what they say about it:

" This newly manufactured powder is very similar in characteristics and burn rate to 4831 and 4350. It has a wide variety of applications. Below is just a sample: 22-250, 220 Swift, 243, 6mm, 257, 25-06, 260, 6.55 Rem Mag, 264, 270, 7mm-08, 280, 284, 7mm Mag, 30-40 Krag, 30-06, 300 H&H, 300 Rem UMag, 300 Win Mag, 303 British, 7.62x54R Russian, 8mm, 338 Win Mag. "

I can't elaborate on it, yet. It only arrived yesterday, and I haven't tested it.

I've got some of that old RVO "Surplus .30-06" powder too, and would like to know excactly what it really is.

I use Bartletts IMR4895 in my 300 Win Mag, it should work in the 30-06.

Yes I am shooting Lee C309-200-R, 200 grain gas checked, wrapped in plummers tape, that chrony at around 2300 fps and group at about 1.5" at 100 yards.

How many grs. are you using, and any filler?

Yes, plain old pipe tape. Much easier than paper patching and darn effective.

50 grains IMR4895, no filler. I think the bullets were cast from some old commercial cast, BN 18 stuff, dropped into water, sized to .309, two layers of tape.
