    311413 lube ?

Got a 311413 GC SC. Casts a nice boolit at .314" and I am sizing to .311". It has the one lube groove AND all this space between the gas check and the 311 dia. of the boolit body. Question is should this space be fille with lube? If so then I need to make a die for my Star. Will be shooting this in a 1903, 30-06.

I fill the space on the ones that I shoot, but I'm using a Lyman 450 or RCBS LAM-2. If you keep velocities down and use a real good lube, you might get away with just filling the upper groove. You might want to get a copper Chore-Boy pad (just in case) and try a few.

The absolute worst groups I ever got with a rifle were trying to push this too fast in a 30-06 w/LLA. It was my first rifle mold and my first attempt at cast in a rifle. Shortly later I stumbled on the Shooters site and life changed for the better.
I would try for 1400-1600 fps with alox coating it and see what happens, you may need a wax lube.

on all my boolits I lube the space between the GC and the driving band, I consider it another lube groove.. I'd use it.

    i don't always fill it.
it's there to scarpe lead into from the gas check.
i'd try 20 with and 20 without and see if there is a difference.
some of my loads have both areas filled the crimp groove filled and some lanolin wiped on the nose too.
others going over 2200 fps have just the one single lube groove filled.
and about your star just re-set the push rod and run them through again to fill the second groove full.

rfr, I make my star dies and punches, each set for a particular boolit. I'll try them the way they are and see what happens, if I get a lot of leading of make a new die set and try again.
