Gas check size

I have a LBT mold for a 8x56r. It is a gas check bullet. .32 cal gas checks seem to small. Could someone measure a .35 cal gas check inside diameter for me?????
Anyone shoot 8x56r cast bullets?????

With Hornady I read .340

Try a Hornady gascheck for the 338 if the 32 one is too small.

Gas check fit may vary with different lots. I've got 2 lots of Hornady (I think it's 32's), one is a press fit on my boolit, the other is very loose. Regards, Woody

Hornady 35 cal currently have are .342 inside

Thanks for all the help. The .35 gas check is to big. The bullet is .329 to .330, the check area is .309 to .310. Any suggestions as to what check to use????
I didn't know they made a .338 check. If someone has one can they post the inside diameter for me.

You want a 348 check, which allows a 320 shank. The 338 check is even larger. However, it looks like you need to research a little more on who's checks were intended for that mold you have. ... felix

I sent an email to LBT last night. No answer yet. Seems that this mold was custom made as it's not listed on the web site.
Any suggestion on who carries different gas checks???? Checked Midway and they only have the common ones.

My Hornady 338 gascheck run about .311 inside. I belive they will work. I don't understand where Felix says a 338 gascheck is bigger then a 348.

I've used 338 checks on my Lee .329 bullet for the 8x56R with very good results.

Thanks for the help. It looks like the .338 gas checks are the one. I found that Lock stock and barrel has them for sale.
I think Felix just made a mistake. He's a pretty smart guy.

Only place I could find .338 gas checks is Lock Stock and Barrel. Ordered a box today. I hope they fit.

Well I got the .338 checks from Lock, Stock and Barrel. They are to big. Outside diameter is .346, inside is .320. I'm woudering if I can size them down from .320 to .310 without smashing it?????
Anyone have any suggestions on what I can try next?????
Maybe I should just put it on Ebay and get a Lee mold. Kind of like passing the problem to someone else.

Try sizing them down. If it doesn't work, you're only out a few gas checks. Or do as Felix said earlier and get some .348 checks - they are smaller than .338 checks. Perhaps someone can send you some to try.

Larry is not going to produce the 348 checks this year as he had planned. Not enough volume. Maybe next. The orders within the group buy which includes this check size will get a refund. ... felix

Before you give up onthe .338 gaschecks try annealing them. Softening the checks will help them to size down easier and eliminate springback.

Most likely thickness.

My 35 cal Hornady checks for .357 are .010 thick. Hornady 30 cal checks are .017.

So there are 3 factors when choosing a check; shank size, final size die, and check thickness.

I picked up 2000 checks at a gun show a while back for a really cheap price. The dealer had somehow dumped 1000 338 and 1000 348 checks together. No big deal, when I needed 348 checks I just spread them out and then pressed the bullets bases down on the check. I was taken aback when the 348 bullets were a good fit on some (the 348 checks), but way loose on the others (338 checks) - had expected the 348 bullet to be too large for some and fit the correct ones. Figured the dealer was mistaken and they had to 35 checks. Nope, the checks were too small for 35 cabliber so I tried a 338 bullet and they fit like a glove. So yes, 338 checks are larger than 348 checks - at least on my three 338 and two 348 moulds.

I guess what you said would have to be proven to me as I lay my eyes upon the checks in person. I refuse to believe that a 338 check is bigger then a 348 or 35 check.
