The "Honor guard" in several countries use SKS rifles. I believe China started the chrome plating for their honor guard. Back in the '80's I saw ads in Shotgun News for Chrome plated SKS rifles that were supposedly used by the Chinese honor guard. I wish I'd bought one now.

Honor guards in many countries and in the US have used chrome rifles. Argentina had chrome M91s, Peru chrome 1909s or 1935s, Thailand chrome Garands, etc...
It's bling for the sake of it.

That's okay, the US is going to annex the Canal. Sarco will be selling you those SKS's by the end of this year, and MagPul will be selling "Patton Signature" mother-of-toilet-seat aftermarket stocks.

Think of the surplus guns we'll get from Gaza, better save up. You'll need them to confront the subsequent terrorist attacks over here.

Actually,...if Trump's ATF director dumps the stupid import rules,...once the war in Ukraine ends we can start getting all those sweet parts kits with intact barrels.

They will keep what they have. There won't be money to replace them.

Panama won't keep anything. If we seize the Canal, we will have to defend it with US troops and US guns. Whatever is left of Panama we'll re-arm at taxpayer expense because Panama won't have the Canal revenue. The Canal fees will be lowered, so shipping companies and importers will profit while taxpayers pony up for Canal maintenance. It's a win-win-win for everybody who really counts, which isn't me or you. Well, except we'll get cheap SKSs for a few months but I'm not an SKS guy. But at least I won't have to sail my mega-yacht around the Horn.

The problem with chromed parade guns is that it's all about the pimptastic bling, and it's not even remotely necessary that they actually work as functional firearms. The SKS (if it's a good one) is a fantastic rifle, but I wouldn't want a chromed one even if it was free.

US isn't going to annex the canal nor take over Panama and get their surplus
Trump already got what he wants; Chinese out of running it and the ports on each end.

The other problem is the previous owners. I was in Panama half a dozen times in the 90s and had fairly close look at some of the weapons carried by LE/Gov personnel and by 'private security guards.' Lots of differenet makes and models but very few looked well-maintained.

Usually true. But one of the best rifles I ever owned was a surplus 1903A3 Springfield that had been converted with chrome plating into a ceremonial parade rifle. It probably was pulled from the racks at Rock Island before ever going overseas when it got plated, because it shot wonderfully.
