All my 38 S&W's have throats over .360. That includes a S&W British Service Revolver, a Colt Police Positive and a few break tops. Like any revolver, best accuracy will result from sizing bullets to throat diameter to .001 /.002 larger.

There's plenty of reading material on this topic on this forum alone.

jmho - like stated buy poster in one of the links you posted - groove diameter, projectile hardness, + diameter affect accuracy more than throat diameter -

Unless the throats are small, like under groove diameter and swaging down your bullets before they get into the bore or are unequal leading to bullets entering the bore at different diameters. Not that it matters that much with many 38 S&W revolvers, they are not likely to be target guns, often short barrels, crude sights and what not.

fwiw - in quality handguns the .38 S&W was + still is extremely accurate - from late 1800's till mid 1900's it was first choice of many champions competitive shooters - including Walter W. Winans + many others -

Do you know what guns these shooters used? I have never seen a .38 S&W with target sights. I have 38-44 and 32-44 target S&W revolvers and a .22 LR single shot S&W on a 38 frame and they have target sights and they have full size grips. Also, my understanding was that .44 Russian was a popular target cartridge, but I never heard the 38 S&W called a popular target cartridge until now. No reason it could not be a good choice with the right gun.

several articles in older Gun Digest + in recent years John Taffin had an article about it's use in Guns magazine - older Rifleman + Arms + the Man refer to it + the .44 Russian being preferred by target shooters - seriously doubt that serious pistol competitors in late 19th + early 20th century had adjustable sights - my reference collection is mostly packed + going to auction in spring, if i find exact copies i'll post them - iirc the S&W large frame top breaks, #3, .44 Russian, .38 baby Russian, Colt Bisley, Remington rolling blocks, + some other long barrel single shots were the most common in use back then - non of them had adjustable sights

In his 1955 classic Sixguns, the great Elmer Keith wrote that the .38 S&W was a very accurate round and confessed to having owned several guns in that caliber. But, he added, "it was a pip squeak load and accuracy was about its only virtue."
