    Steel Cased 9MM

    Just a heads up

I was getting ready to load 9mm
All of this batch of brass was range pickup from a few weeks ago

So I looked at the 9mm brass I had vibrated to sort out the Aluminium and any steel cases

But after I did that I passed a magnet over what looked to be all brass colored cases

When I was shocked to see a bunch of cases stuck to the magnet

These all looked to be the standard yellow brass
But I guess some one is plating steel cases with a brass layer

Capital was the brand IMO as I remember several of that brand boxes when I cleaned up

There are a couple of brands that did that although I can't for the life of me remember their names. I have gotten a few when I get range pick up.

Ran into the same thing finding some S&B steel. The one on the right is steel. Headstamp exactly like the other S&B brass. Slight orange color.

Hmm. I guess I need to dig out a big magnet and check the range brass I have.

    Yes
The cases I found that were brass plated
    Were Boxer primed

There are some SIG cases also I ran into recently. An email to/from SIG says they do NOT produce steel case...yet here they are. The letters are slightly different though. I loaded them once and never picked them up again. Visually, I would have sworn before a jury of my peers it was brass...the magnet does not lie.
Nines&Twos account was hacked....I couldn't get any help fixing it, so I made this is the new one.

Checked all I have (few thousand) and didn't find any steel. Dumb luck at it's finest.

I have a small stash of Wolf Boxer primed .45 auto steel cases.
I use them for hunting ammo so loss isn’t a concern.
But they are the gray laquered ones.

Some MagTech and Monarch 9mm cases are nickel plated steel too. Virtually all shotshells too.

I'm going back over all my imported brass with a magnet. Thanks.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the steel case was just chromate passivated, given the orange cast to it. Applying a layer of true brass plating to those cases would add a half cent to a penny per case (plating basket load density would be low b/c the cases are light) but a quick dip in yellow chromate might add only a couple hundredths of a cent and the appearance would be that of brass.

Is there a problem with steel cases? I've run a ton of the Wolf 45 cal cases through a lot of subguns and never had any problems. They last as long as the brass and run just fine. Why would plated steel cases be a problem?

Whatever is on it is peeling where the extractor grabbed the rim.
