Improvised lid for Lyman 55 powder measure reservoir

While using my orange Lyman 55 powder measure today I noticed that the opening at the top of the reservoir looked about the same size and the opening on a 1 lb. bottlo of Clays powder. I tried the Clays lid on the powder reservoir and it was a close fit. I believe if the threads were ground off it would be a good fit. I found another metal powder bottle lid that did snugly fit a gray Lyman 55 reservoir. I have the Lyman metal lids for both of my 55s so won't need to improvise. You see a lot of 55s on sale boards that are missing the lids; don't let that keep you from buying one (or a spare) if the price is right. This may be old news but but it's news to me.

I used the plastic lid off and old bottle of Accurate powder. Just used a Dremel and a sanding drum to do some adjustments.

I ave made them from paper and tape They work and dont look bad easy enough to do. cut a strip of paper to width desired and long enough to wrap around with some overlapand glue ends to fit loosley around measure then wrap a layer of tape around it. . Work around now with strips going over center of top and down war side, leave enough to wrap up under lip on each side. Cut a disc of thin card board to fit inside top and press in.

Thiscan be done with paper and glue also

Don't have any Lyman powder measures, but for RCBS Uniflow the lid off a can of spray paint works better than the old, flat plastic ones. The new lids are soft plastic and fit tight.

There are many of those Lyman 55’s around and they are well made and work great when property adjusted. Unfortunately Lyman used to have spare parts but they are starting to dry up. I think I still have 2 or 3 in my spare equipment stash.

I use a Freeze Plug on one of my Belding & Mull measures and one 55 with a turned oak lid.
