Ive been of the opinion for some years that very few hunting "accidents" are really accidents. As to hunting licenses if one was the owner of the property then in most states a license isnt required.

Not sure of all the reasons,
but Louisiana has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous places----- for hunters.

Story of a hunting "accident" that happened in Michigan many years ago. Guy that was killed was having an affair with the wife of the guy that killed him.

I'm not much of a deer hunter, never have shot a deer in my life, if I live long enough perhaps that will change.
One year I opted out of deer hunting because I heard the guy, I was going with almost shot his brother because he shot at a sound.
I said, no thanks, my tag didn't get filled.
The last two years I went with my neighbor. The first year I went with him we both got skunked, we didn't get a shot.
2024 we saw a lot of deer and got some shots, but missed, he was shooting a bow and I a crossbow.
The last time out I had my crossbow, I had a perfect shot and to my stupidity I had the safety on, violated an important rule, know your weapon, well I guess I do, but forgot to take the safety off.
Anyway, nobody got hurt, not even the deer.
During gun season I got three good shots at a deer, but well over 150 yards and missed all three times, all as fast as I could cycle the 45-70.
I found out shooting paper targets is easier than at a running deer at over 150 yards.
If I ever get a deer or not, I really don't care, I had the time of my life.
My neighbor is a saint, he has a lot on his plate, works a full-time job as a heavy equipment operator at night and his wife works at a trucking firm during the day.
Between the two of them they have a full-time care giver job for their son who has muscular dystrophy.
I don't know how they do it.
I really didn't know the people for many years as I am like most people and pretty much live in my own shell.
I did see a young man on crutches a few years back and later a wheelchair.
They had a lot of parties, like 4th of July and when I was shooting my little BP canon was quite amused by it.
Their son now confined to an electric wheelchair, weighed hard on my heart.
I bought a little battery powered drone and took it over and gave it to his mother, I said, "give this to your son".
She wanted to pay me for it, but I would not have it.
I talked to them off and on and learned their names when I walked past their place walking my dog.
One time, I must have mentioned I would really like to go deer hunting.
Sometime later I got a knock on my door, and it was Matt, my neighbor, and would I like to go deer hunting?
We have been fast friends since and recently he asked me if I would like to go fishing.
I said of course, it seems some of the other people he hunts with, once they get their deer are gone, this really bugs him.
I will stick with him for as long as he wants to hunt, he knows this and appreciates it, and I will do it as long as I am able.

The Alberta government removed the dress code (Blaze orange and/ or red) over 30 years ago. The gunshot hunting accident rate is zero most years.
The reason the dress code was dropped was that no one else in the woods was required to wear blaze orange or red.
The reason that blaze orange / red was required was so that C0s (Conservation officers) could identify hunters.
That left a large number of "poachers" who did not wear the mandatory colours.
I used to wear blaze orange all of the time. When Stopped by a CO they would ask how the Hunting was. My reply, "I'm not hunting". Their next question , "why the blaze orange then?" My replay " i like meeting COs".
Go now and pour yourself a hot one...

Best I remember, in Texas we are required to wear orange if deer hunting, but not when hog hunting... Since you can hunt hogs throughout the year (day or night) and there is no limit on them because they are considered pests whereas deer season is limited in both duration and how many you are allowed to harvest, the seasons definitely overlap... Not every state requires orange when hunting on private land also... I've been in areas of Louisiana where the brush was so thick that a deer could be 50 ft away from you and you might not be able to see it...

I wear orange throughout every deer season even if just working near the house. There are plenty of idiots out there.

Blaze Orange is not required for hunting in Texas except on public land-state or federal.
And it’s not required for turkey hunting at all.

Good to know... I guess I won't need to be wearing orange when I go to Kroger's to get my turkey...

Seriously though... Are there wild turkeys in your part of Texas? I've never seen any here in the SE Gulf Coast area -- plenty of hogs though...

We have lots of wild turkeys in NC Texas.
I think that they have a calendar because they left here as soon as season opened this past fall!

I've driven through that area many times over the years... The one thing that I noticed is that the road kill there is more likely to be skunks whereas down here, it's more likely to be armadillos... Maybe it's just because dead skunks are "noticeable" from a lot further away than a 'possum on a half shell...

I have seen ONE actual beaver (the 4-legged type) around here though... I definitely did not know we had them around here...

I wear orange during hunting season ANYTIME I'm in the field. Its not for the law as much as I want to be seen.
Deer CANNOT see orange. You can sit in the middle of a field in full orange and as long as you dont move the deer will walk right up to you. That said I do believe that camo orange is better as it breaks up the pattern.
