    Scoping my Krag

Well, been contemplating putting a scope on my 1898 Springfield Krag for a while. Been search'n the net for different scope mounts available. Options are sparse to say the least. Didn't really want to drill any extra holes in my "baby", so going to go with the S&K no drill
mount. Looks to be an easy install, unless I'm miss'n something. After all my searching on the net, I couldn't really come up with a solid conclusion on whether or not the scope will or will not be setting directly over the center-line of the action, and in line with the bore. Has anyone here actually installed one of these particular mounts on their Krag? If my eyes were better, I would have rather used the rifle with the Redfield receiver sight. But, I'm struggling to focus a lot now days. I believe I will get a lot more enjoyment out of the old girl, and being able to shoot at further distances. I have the mount ordered. I recond I can always return it if it doesn't suit me.
    If a 41 won't stop it, I wouldn't bet my life on a 44.

Spoke to soon. According to what I just read, the S&K mount, puts the scope in direct line of the bore axis. YESSSSS!

I'm glad that you decided to go with the S&K mount system. The design of the Krag doesn't lend itself to many options when it comes to mounting a scope, and the side mount permanently disfigures the receiver with three or four large screw holes. Maybe acceptable to some when the mount is on the rifle, but when removed by someone else they look just awful with the large holes remaining. Further, most of the side mounts do not align the scope over the bore, placing the scope to the left of the receiver.

Here's a photo of the only one I ever found to be acceptable. I no longer own either of the pictured rifles, and no longer own a scoped Krag. Shown is an old Williams set- up which used special rings that moved the scope directly over the receiver. You'd look long and hard to find one of these set-ups as they have been discontinued from production for many years. I did not, and would not, drill the holes--they were there when I acquired the rifle. And they'll still be there if the scope is removed.

Really lookin forward to getting it mounted the Krag, and a dated scope. I watched a video on different scope makes, from way back in the early 1900's on up to modern times. The demise of the quality scopes by major manufacturers started back in around the mid 60's. A "lot" of the manufacturers couldn't compete "price wise" with the lower quality (mainly asian) scopes being manufactured. So US made scopes makers began having their scopes manufactured overseas. So, I'm wanting to mount an older model scope (50's - 60"s) to approximate the vintage rifle. Now, my brother inherited our dad's pre-64 model 70 winchester in 30-06. Upon its top set an older model Weaver 2 3/4 x 5 scope. Very good condition. It even has on the edges and corners, some slight wear peekin through the patina finish. Shows wear, but not beat up. He replaced it "boooo" with a modern 3x9 scope. Not sure what brand. I'm gonna try to con him out of it to mount on my Krag. He owes me. In 2003, I give him a kidney, and I'm back to collect on that donation.

Anyone else have their Krag scoped? Would love to see pics of the different mounts and scopes.

    Nice work.
I scoped my M48 BO back in about 2002. It's topped with a Leupold 3x9x40 VX II. Chambered in 8mm-06 AI. Love the cartridge.

Since last Tuesday, I've been babysitting my brother. He had a full reverse shoulder surgery.
Apparently, the information I read on the "net", about the S&K scope Krag scope mount mounting centerline with the bore is WRONG! Imagine that. I looked for where I found that particular information, but couldn't find it. The scope will be .750" to the left of center line of the bore. While I was gone, the S&K mount came, and today I got it mounted. Looks good, and looks strong. Solid steel, so it does add quite a bit of weight. But, I don't plan on traipsing around in the woods with it, so no worries. My brother did give me the Weaver KV 2 3/4 x 5x scope that our dad had on his rifle. It's a nice scope, in purty good condition. The only issue, is that it's one of the early 50's model, that DIDN'T have the (constantly centered reticle). So, the crosshairs are not centered. No telling where they're gonna wind up when I get the rifle sighted with the scope. I'll give a range report after I shoot it for effect.

Made it to the range today to try out the mount and scope. I did a make shift cheek riser to get my eye in line with the scope. Material used was layers of the flexable polypropylene material. Not purty at all, it looks like orangutan lips sewed up with a grapevine. It doesn't quite fit right, but it did help. To save ammunition, I was only shooting at 25 yards. Being so close, when I finally got it adjusted right, it shot hole for hole. The .750 offset of the scope was not comfortable, but after one gets used to it it may be ok. I'm going to try to improve the riser to get a better cheek weld.
