    CCI 200 primers required?

Lyman cast boolit handbook indicates that CCI 200 primers be used with certain powders in 30-30. Specifically, 170 gn over 3031 and 748. I plan on using a Lee flat nose over said propellants. Is there a particular reason for CCI 200 or am I ok to use whatever?

I would use any large rifle primer

Certainly ... especially if you already changed Boolts

I’m sure that it’s just what they tested with and they don’t want to assume that all is good with other LRPs. Work up a load.

Always start low and work up. Your gun/chamber/bore size is almost certainly not the same as the one used for the test in the Lyman manual. And, you changed 1 item of the load and want to change another. Repeat, ALWAYS start low and work up.

I know components are getting expensive but your body parts are invaluable to you. Yeah use what ever primer you want but work up.

There’s a “thing” about using magnum primers with slower burning powders. Not necessarily because it’s needed for any particular powder, just “maybe it’s needed”. Probably some sort of assumption about slower powders’ deterrent coatings making them hard to ignite.

I’d load up a few test rounds with standard primers and see if they work with your powder.

Hotter primers have always been recommended with Ball Powders such as 748. GW

Yep, but its more a case of conservatism on the part of authors of the manuals-- not something proven to be needed.
