S&W Response 9mm Carbine

I just saw an ad for the S&W 9mm carbine.
The one that I have is from Palmetto State Armory and it has a 1 in 9 twist rate that is not ideal for cast boolits.
I am wondering what the twist rate is on this rifle?

So, what is ideal for cast bullets, assuming the bullet is standard 125gr?

A 10-inch twist is standard for 9mm. I get better accuracy with Accurate 35-145H which weighs 147-grains in my alloy, sized .357 and loaded subsonic. Lighter cast bullets did not group at all for me. I am loading for a Beretta 92 and a 16-inch barrel rifle with Green Mountain 9mm barrel threaded for suppressor.

Most USA made 9mm pistols have a 1:16 twist like a 38 Special.
The Spanish Destroyer Carbine that I am converting to 9mm Luger has a 1:16 twist.
It should be a nice cast boolit shooter!

Wow, I hadn't even heard of this thing. Talk about S&W's take on a proprietary AR9 platform... From the looks of it, I would have just built one myself...oh wait...I already did...




That said.... The 1/9 or 1/10 twist is rather fast for a handgun cartridge. If it were me, I would probably stick with heavier loads IF I WERE TO BUY ONE.

Honestly, It's easier to build one these days. You can buy cheap 9mm kits for CHEAP, which only require a lower. And honestly, we're talking about an AR9. S&W is not reinventing anything here.... So buy cheap and save yourself a little cash.

And that is just one example. I've seen complete built kits for less than $300. Yeah, it's not going to be top of the line parts. But it will build a dependable gun...

Buy the kit, get a cheap AR9 lower (you can typically grab a AR9 lower for around $150). Then it's just a matter of installing the FCG and lower parts, then snapping the upper on. Or you can wait for sales, or use a cheap 80% lower....

When I built mine a few years ago I think I built the whole thing (including the Form 1 stamp and DFA Stock kit for like $1000 all in). I've since spent more on it. But that is just the nature of playing with the NFA...

My Ruger 9mm carbine is a 1-10 twist. Shooting bullets tumble-lubed in 45-45-10 with Bullseye at about 1100 fps, they shoot well and so clean you'd think the gun was unfired. I would therefore not automatically think that a slight tightening to 1-9" would be a cause for concern.

I think 1:9 twist would be dandy with 200 grain boolits! They functioned my 16” blowback carbine and were hearing safe.

The faster twist gives better terminal performance. Hollow points open faster and track straighter through barriers into ballistic gel compared to the slower twist.
S&W used to use their traditional 1 in 18.75” twist in 9mm pistols until around 15 years ago when they switched to 1:10.

I converted my Destroyer to 38 Super (set barrel back 1/2 thread) and it is great with the Lee 120 gr TC cast bullet.

It's the mag itself. When you are used to looking at .223 width mags the 9mm glock mags look like skinny sticks. I like the shortest mag available in my FM9. The magwell is the same size as the mag, just thicker inside.

I often wondered why 9 mm luger used a 1 in 10 twist where 38 super used 1 in 16. I always thought 38 super was a hot loaded 9 mm luger.
