I have a High Standard Sportmatic Deluxe in 12 ga. I don't know the manufacture date. Can I shoot steel shot in this barrel?

I wouldn't. The older shotguns generally have thinner barrels and tighter chokes which can lead to bulging at the choke. Years ago we fired five rounds of steel thru my wife's 1100 12 gauge and the damage was readily apparent. If you bulge or worse yet split the barrel where will you find another.
BIG OR SMALL I LIKE THEM ALL, 577 TO 22 HORNET.
I kinda figured that but needed verification. Thanks a bunch.

You can safely shoot bismuth shells through that gun for waterfowl or where non toxic shot is required.
You could if you want, but only with Modified or Improve cylinder chokes.
