    Wrong Number Text Scam

This happened to me last night. Got a text set that went like this:

    "Are you free tomorrow?"

"I don't have this number saved. Who is this?"

"Are you not Linda? I must have entered the wrong number. I was trying to set up a time to play golf with a friend. So sorry."

    "No problem, stuff happens"

"Yes it does and thank you for being so kind. Sometimes we forget that there are nice people in the world. I appreciate you being nice to me about this. I just moved to LA and if you are ever out here let me buy you a coffee at Rufo's"

At this point I'm thinking an elderly person had a wrong number and am ready for this to end. I give a thumbs up to that one to end it. But no...

"Once again I want to thank you for being nice. It's nice to make new friends. Making friends is friendly. My name is Scarlett and I am 36 years old. I just moved to LA from Canada. What is your name?"

I felt like this was a phishing attempt at this point so I blocked the number but did not report it as spam. Then I googled it and it is a textbook attempt to fake texting a wrong number. Then they are overly nice to you, opening a 2-way conversation. This may go on for awhile until they start to attempt to lure you into investing in cryptocurrency.

    Beware.

The nice way is to have said no problem after the guy's first response and then blocked the number.

I'm a bit more abrupt and would have said sorry wrong number and immediately blocked as I don't play golf, and if I did, my partners would be in my phone. I've still got my old MS areas code and NO phone calls are picked up from any MS area codes. Yes, lots of scams. There are folks that are now destitute due to giving away tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars to scam charities and scammers. Both the same

I had one of those; it took me about the same length of time to figure out that it was not legit.

Could reply “Same place and time as last week, you get the room and don't forget to send me the fee in advance.” Or “you were told not to contact me, communicate ONLY through your handler or I will have no choice but to modify our contract, this is your only reminder.”

Sometimes funny things can happen with a wrong number. I got a call, first thing said was related to my canine heritage. Then how I had stolen the wifes phone and he wanted it back and explained the consequences. All I said was to look at the # he dialed. Just think of all the things I could said to make it go sideways. The wife might have been in trouble if not already.

Years ago someone named Wayne had been giving out my number, have no idea who. I got a good many calls from different ladies for Wayne. Some of them being very explicit embarrassed themselves before figuring out I was not Wayne.

    It was sort of entertaining.

Most of my scam callers are from India. Their automatic dialing machines make a distinct click after you say hello and you are connected to a scammer with an Indian accent. They are fishin for a guppy to buy final funeral expenses, change over your electric service, or bill Medicare on your behalf. They need your name, age, birth date, address, SS no., your Medicare No. and any information on you they can obtain to proceed with their money scam. I sometimes insult them or ask if their parents know they are a scammer. Our state department should cut off all foreign aid to India until the India Police crack down on the scam call centers. There is a guy on UTube called Perougi He sometimes gets access to their computers and throughly screws them up. It is funny to watch.

A person can have all sorts of fun with these deals if you want to spend the time. I received a query type of text and typed, "I TOLD YOU NEVER TO CONTACT ME AT THIS NUMBER. I'M IN WITNESS PROTECTION AND INTEND TO STAY THAT WAY!"

The person on the other end did not reply...

I made the mistake of messing with someone phishing years ago on my old flip phone with no way to block the call. Never gonna do that again after 50 calls declined they gave up finally.

I get this type of text all the time...I just ignore them....they don't try a second time....I also block the number after a week....just in case.

I got a call several years ago after moving south. Still had home area code. Girl said something about ",I'll be outside in 15 min " or something. Called her back to let her know wrong number since VT in January is kinda cold to be hanging around outside. We talked for 30 min or so about stuff.

When someone from India calls, just say "It's over, but there's blood everywhere!" and hang up.

Back in my younger years in MA, thieves would call houses in my suburb on a Saturday night.
Their game was to find several houses empty, and raid one with no neighbors home.
Names on mailboxes, names in the phonebook easy peasy.
Could be nervous about answering that call, a teen home alone.
Was almost routine. Yah, we're home, who wants to know?

If you want to talk to me call my wife, she won't answer either
Everybody east of Burma has her number
I bought a tracphone at walmart when the old flipphone was denied service
never told anyone the new number
( I told a Ford dealer the old number, and they sold it)
certainly did not register the new number online
never will respond to tracphones nonsense either.

But every day I get a weird text like "Call me back" "Sorry I missed you"
and costs me a minute. Pooey on crank calls.
If I call, like the power company to pay my bill, can they sell the number?
Somebody is. Never did like telephones.

Who is doing this? Are they Phishing the world at random?
Must payoff or they would not do it.

I was getting several of those texts a day for about a week. I just block the number and report scam. They have stopped now.
I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. If it's not important enough to leave a message I'm not going to call back to see what I missed.
I think if you respond in any way, at best your number gets sold as a working number so you get more scammers. Worst case they convince you to part with your money before selling your number to other scammers.

They will eventually convince someone to send them money. Throw out the hook repeatedly till you land one right?

I was in a patient's room several years ago. 80 year old lady. Her phone got a text. A Flip phone. It was a "You have a package but we need your information to send it. Click this link to send your information"

I told her it was a scam. She said "Why would someone from the post office tell a lie?"

I got one like that a couple months ago. After a few back and forth messages, I ignored her. That was the end of it. After a few messages, it started smelling very fishy...

For me after I replied "You have the wrong number" I thought that was all there would and should be. After it kept going I knew it was someone elderly or a scammer.

I couldn't remember if you auto reported the number as spam when you hit "block" and I didn't want to report an elderly person as spam. When I opened options it has a separate choice for block and report spam so I only chose block.

After Googling it I found it was a scam.
