This happened to me last night. Got a text set that went like this:
"Are you free tomorrow?"
"I don't have this number saved. Who is this?"
"Are you not Linda? I must have entered the wrong number. I was trying to set up a time to play golf with a friend. So sorry."
"No problem, stuff happens"
"Yes it does and thank you for being so kind. Sometimes we forget that there are nice people in the world. I appreciate you being nice to me about this. I just moved to LA and if you are ever out here let me buy you a coffee at Rufo's"
At this point I'm thinking an elderly person had a wrong number and am ready for this to end. I give a thumbs up to that one to end it. But no...
"Once again I want to thank you for being nice. It's nice to make new friends. Making friends is friendly. My name is Scarlett and I am 36 years old. I just moved to LA from Canada. What is your name?"
I felt like this was a phishing attempt at this point so I blocked the number but did not report it as spam. Then I googled it and it is a textbook attempt to fake texting a wrong number. Then they are overly nice to you, opening a 2-way conversation. This may go on for awhile until they start to attempt to lure you into investing in cryptocurrency.
Beware.
