I think if you respond in any way, at best your number gets sold as a working number so you get more scammers. Worst case they convince you to part with your money before selling your number to other scammers.
This is what I do. For calls received at both home and cell, I have reported them (if by chance I did answer) to the do not call registry if they called back again. A lot call back and the registry I a joke. My home cordless has an option to block calls. It is usually full but it does help.

do not call registry is a joke and I think it was hacked a while back... or an employee stole the database and sold it...

Thanks for the heads-up. I've gotten a few of those calls recently. I am polite to them but I terminate the call rather quickly.

The best ones are on the work cell - "Sir, do you know you are calling an Arizona state government phone number?"

So called "smart phones" were the biggest boon to those who have been labeled as "scammers" but WHO made this a reality for them, WHO paved the highway for them, the list goes on and on. If you have a 'smart phone' you WILL be scammed! Face to face transactions are better, but then who looks a gift horse in the mouth or collects their "free Lunch"? The digital world is really NOT your friend, but it is a BIG money maker for others!

My wife got this text scam attempt tonight. Hers went like this:

"What are you doing after work?"

    "Who is this?"

"Oh is this not Chloe's number? I thought I saved the correct number but I must have entered it wrong...."

On the other hand . . . YOU can sometimes misdial a number and end up with some interesting results.

My mother in law stayed with us in AZ during the winter for a number of years before her health failed. She was a wonderful woman - had a great sense of humor and just a fun lady. My wife and I had an errand to run and I asked her if she wanted to ride along. She said she was going to stay at the house as she had to call Consumers Energy about a question she had on her Statement for her apartment back in Michigan. We left her to do her call and when we got back about a half an hour or so later, I asked her if she was able to get in touch with Consumers Energy and get her question answered. She smiled a big smile and said, "Oh Jimmy! You won't believe what happened! I dialed the number and I got this really nice girl on the other end and she was telling me all the naughty things she could do for me!" Evidently the call went on for several minutes and she didn't hang up when she realized she had not dialed the Consumers Energy number - she was having too much fun listening to this girl go on and on.

My mother in law had macular degeneration and her vision wasn't the best. I quickly figured out that she had misdeed the number and instead son dialing 1-800, she had dialed 1-900 - which had connected her to a phone sex number. We all had a good laugh over it. In fact, I would often remind her of it and thens she would giggle. We had a great relationship and she always called me her "favorite son in law . . . and I would remind her that I was her ONLY son in law. After she passed, when I did a Eulogy for her, I couldn't resist . . . I had to tell the story, among others, of how she had called Consumers Energy and gotten a phone sex number. For those who attended the funeral, when I told the story, there was an uproar of laughter. They all knew what an adventurous nature she had.

A couple of things. Nice story bedbug. Second, if you buy a new phone of any sort and get a new number, just realize there are a finite number of phone numbers in each area code and pretty much all over the US, those have all been given out. It's why places like MS now have 3 area codes when 30 years ago it was all one. You will get all the spam calls the PO got along with all their old friends and family that had the old number. Three, I block dozens of numbers a week. It does no good at all. Four, why do calls marked spam even ring through to you? I don't understand that one

Something that I've never understood is that when you block someone they just can't call you, and that's it. When you block someone there should be a loud robotic voice that says "YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED!" What's the fun in having some obnoxious person not getting through to you when they can have it put in their face? Yes, this should be an option. When I block someone I want them to know that they've been blocked.
