    Large rifle primers

Where are you guys/girls/both/neither ordering large rifle primers from online? I’m not really a primer snob and not in need of match grade stuff but I’m not opposed to it either.
I know a few places run sales and include the hazmat fee a couple times per year but I can’t remember who they are so that would help too. It’s been a long while since I’ve had to buy primers.

    Before you answer….
First off, I prefer to buy from local stores, and I’ve checked the local stores for years to no avail. They don’t have them. So there’s really no need to tell me to just go to the local store.
Secondly, I’m super happy you stocked up when primers were nearly free. Unless you’re sending them to me, it’s of no help to me.
Lastly, I know they aren’t cheap. They aren’t going to get any cheaper (or much cheaper anyway) regardless of who is the next president.

I apologize if this sounds rude, but these types of posts sometimes get a lot of responses that aren’t helpful. I’m always willing to chitchat, but this post isn’t the place. Thanks in advance.

Last Summer I ordered LRPs from Republic Ammunition. Their prices are pretty low and the HAZMAT Fee is only $14.95.

    Try American reloading
https://americanreloading.com/collections/rifle-primers their primers go somewhat quick. Sometimes they have Ginex primers, they seem to be a bit tighter going into the primer pocket and I believe they are a bit hotter. I would set up for an email notifications and when they are in stock get some.

Natchez has Remington for $90. Not the cheapest prices but they usually have some. I usually get them from PV or Grafs which periodically has free hazmat. Most places will now only charge one hazmat fee for combined powder and primer order so if you need any 8# powders that can save a bunch too.

Ammoseek is your friend, Check in there for the best prices and then go to that site to see if it suits your wants and needs. Once in ammoseek look under "reloading" for powder, primers and such.

How far is Madison, Indiana from you ... There a reloading shop there that has them in stock. They don't do shipping.

It’s about an hour and a half away so it would have to be a really good price to justify the trip.

In the past I have ordered primers from midwayusa. Sometimes you can get on waiting list. I have what I need now.

Try the large chain stores. In my area of the south sports academy and brass pro may have them.

    Internet

But midway still has some and they are expensive.

ammoseek is always my first site. It's perfect for locating supplies. The only thing that would make the site better would be a column for hazmat fees.

Also keep checking Brownells and Natchez for sales. Large rifle primers still sell for a premium but last I looked they both had some in stock.

Cabela’s early this year had sporadic availability. It required a persistent 3X a day login routine to check. After a few weeks of that, when I finally connected for my one allowed brick, my feeling of bliss was unmatched by anything in life so far. They shipped it directly to my local store, no extra fee. Around $90. I believe I may start that up again for another one. Good luck.

Iron in your original post you don't mention what calibers you are loading and with what powders/pressure levels. I mention this as my shooting/match partner and I have found better accuracy along with lower ES/SD's using large pistol primers. We are loading 45-70 and 40-65 cast loads with boolits from 300-535 grains. Primary powders are 5744, 2400, Unique and Green dot. Have recently been working some with BE-86 as a substitute for the Unique and Green dot. We have been able to achieve ES mid 20's or less with SD's under 10. Same loads with large rifle primers were much higher. I believe this may be due to the stronger rifle primers pushing the boolit out of the case increasing the combustion chamber volume resulting in a less efficient powder burn. Just some food for thought and large pistol primers seem to be easier to find.

Large pistol primers are .010 smaller in diameter and .080 shorter than Large rifle primers so what you are suggesting can be very dangerous!!!!

Primer Type Height Min Diameter Max
    Small Rifle/Pistol 0.1150 0.1765
    Large Rifle 0.1230 0.2130
    Large Pistol 0.1150 0.2120

Here is a shot from Ammoseek. large rifle primers are not that hard to find nor all that expensive.

It's not that bad. Look on page 23 of the SAAMI pistol standard primer and primer pocket drawings. The height difference is -0.003" to +0.021 at the extremes, but the diameter difference is only -0.0015" to +0.0030" in the worst-case extremes. So, there is some overlap.

    LP 0.115" to 0.126" high, 0.2100" to 0.2120" wide
    LR 0.123" to 0.136" high, 0.2105" to 0.2130" wide

    Sgt H,

You've described a common issue. You've got it on the LP end, but on the SP end, the 22 Hornet is famous for getting lousy velocity SD with many SR primers and truly requiring a primer that is really mild (Rem 1½ or SP standard primer). Short powder column pistol cartridges have the same issue and sometimes will exhibit a LOWER velocity with magnum primers than with standard primers because of it.

The main difference between standard and magnum primers, ignoring differences in cup thickness and anvil shape, is magnum primers are designed to produce a larger volume of gas than a standard primer does. This (and here's the key point to pay attention to) is because magnum cases are larger than standard cases and, therefore, need a larger volume of gas to produce adequate start pressure in the extra cumulative air space their larger volume has between the total number of grains of powder they hold. They also need a higher start pressure because magnum cartridges tend to be loaded with larger quantities of slower powders to get their maximum velocities, and slower powders, in general, need higher start pressure to burn well and reasonably cleanly.

A bit of reflection reveals a couple of things about the above. One is that if you have a good deal of case capacity for the powder charges and velocities you produce with modern powders and your loads, therefore, are low loading density, then the empty air space left by that low case fill plus the air space between the grains may be about the same amount of air space as is between the grains of powder in a 100% load density charge in a larger magnum case. Therefore, if you have low loading density in a non-magnum case, it follows that this is another situation in which a magnum primer may produce better starting pressures than a standard primer does. A good example is 30-06 loaded with "Garand loads" that often have 75% to 85% load density. A number of folks have reported reducing their velocity SD by going to magnum primers in them. The benchrest case prep step of uniforming and deburring the flash hole has produced that same result for me in a low density 308 Win load that I used only at 100 yards.

I still say it is promoting an unsafe condition. The LP is smaller than the LR and as such you could have primer blowouts. If they fire at all due to being too low. SP and SR are close enough that it works but this to me is a no-go. My opinion and I am sticking to it.

Rick, I think you got your decimal point in the wrong place. How about .001 smaller in diameter and .008 in height?
