To all the FB haters who have actually used it some.

One thing about FB is the algorithm shows you what it thinks you want to see. If you use FB a little bit and then get tired of what you see, then just start searching for other things that interest you, that renews the data the algorithm uses, to show you new stuff. One hobby I got from my Dad, reading newspaper classified ads. If you spend half an hour looking through FB marketplace ads, the data the algorithm uses is renewed and will always be showing you new stuff. Joining a group here and there, adds to the data. Of course, 'they' are learning about you...that data is where FB makes the money.
I think all that is why FB Marketplace has basically killed Craigslist, because while FB Marketplace is much like craigslist, it's like a smart version...much like how our smart phones are better than the prior ones. One can either embrace this, or reject it.

I use FB quite a bit. I joined that group when I seen this thread, as I hadn't heard of it before. It took until this morning to be accepted, after which, I did see your two posts.

Welp looks like I got banned then , weird, but seems that what happens when you go and upset the apple cart.

What percentage of those members are actively posting is my question. I'm on a bunch of forums where the member bases are 10k plus but really you only have like 500 actively posting.

Better what's the recruitment looking like. How many people actively join and become active members per month?

To each his own, what works for me may not work for someone else, we all have our preferences. I for one have never had a a book of faces account nor any other social media account outside of reddit and that account has long since been deleted. This forum in particular is a rarity if not jewel of the modern internet IMHO. I wasn't going to reply to this thread because I knew it would be long but, castboolits forum is near and dear to my heart because of what it's given me over the years. It's been stuck in my craw, I've thought about this allot over time so pardon me if I go on a bit.

wolfdog91 is not wrong, traditional discussion forums in general have been on the decline with the rise of social media and especially discord, there's no denying that.

The problem with those platforms is that they suffer from "present shock". What I mean by that is they are great for communicating what's going on in the here and now like "look at these pancakes I just made." or "check out this selfie don't I just look mahhhvelous!". There's no past, there's no future and there is no meaningful or permanent sharing, storage, and retrieval of shared knowledge. Over the years many a game or software developer whose product I've used has shut down their support forums in favor of social media sites or discord and without exception has resulted in total loss of knowledge and information built up and shared by users for decades. Many of those forums being the only source for specific and detailed knowledge on a given thing. All I can say is thank the internet for archive.org and the millions of users that have saw fit over the decades to archive much of the info from these sites. Additionally social media and discord are also poor platforms for archiving and retrieving large amounts of shared knowledge over time for the following reasons, most social media sites and all discords are "login walled" or "no account, no information for you", social media groups and discords are often started and managed by very few if even more than one person and should they loose interest it's gone, groups and discords can be shutdown or deleted due to the whim of the corporation that owns the platform it resides on or the moderators employed by them. I tried a reloading discord several years ago that spawned out of reddit, it was terrible. Setting aside the bad and dangerous advice often shared, any useful information was difficult if not impossible to retrieve once it scrolled out of view often in mere seconds. Coupled with the shear amount of unbridled "noise" of off topic discussion or internet fighting .

One further observation I made about that discord, wolfdog91 mentions the "old Gaurd good ole boys club mentality on the old forums", I don't dispute that, it's a thing, forum users and moderators should do all they can to eliminate or keep that sort of thing in check. I've seen more than one discussion forum destroyed when just a few members are allowed to run rampant in that manner. The equivalent I found on this particular discord at least (it's the only one I ever tried) was the "march in lock step hive mind lemming fan boys", that is a large group of users that only repeatedly parroted the same product or method in response to questions or requests for help, regardless if it fit the bill, whatever the hot "thing" was at that time that was THE answer. Regardless of the question asked, there would be multiple often many multiples of the same answer "you need to get product XYZ" or "you should use method ABC". Didn't matter if that persons use case didn't warrant purchasing a product costing hundreds of dollars, that was always the answer. I used to also see this to a lesser degree on reddit also.

There are however many forums that I've joined as far back as the late 90's that are not only still going they thriving. The key distinction of those sites in my experience is the amount of shared knowledge, accessibility to it, ability to retrieve it, consistency of management and moderation, and most importantly the support of it's user base both financially and in contributing different thoughts and ideas on whatever the given subject.

This particular website excels at all of that without equal.

• I lurked this forum for years possibly from inception and learned a bunch before I finally created an account in 2009.
• If there's something I want to know the forum advanced search usually returns just those threads that apply all the way back to the forum start if I desire quickly and easily.
• Over the years any thread I've found interesting or that I might refer to later I could subscribe to it and it would be instantly retrievable in my control panel, 19 years worth at the click of a button.
  
  
• Management and moderation are just as consistent now as they were the day I signed up. There are rules, those rules are modified and maintained regularly based on feedback from the user base, there are specific forums devoted to specific subjects so that chatter and noise doesn't doesn't drown out all else.
• New users are welcomed and encouraged, we were all there once and we are all happy to pass down our experiences and the knowledge that was passed down by the "old timers" to us when we started out. There's no gate keeping, old guard, good ole boys club and nor would any be tolerated.
• The vast majority of the users here are active and contribute quite often over the very long term. As your read threads here take note of the post counts and join dates of those that are posting and you will see what I mean.
• The knowledge and information shared is quite varied and usually a spot on relative response on the subject or question of the OPs original post, well thought out and explained. Advice could be anything from "spend $X00.00 on product Y" to "You can solve that with $5.00 worth of stuff from the hardware store, here's how." or "Don't waste your time doing what that youtube guy said to do and more importantly here's why.". I see very few canned, trite, terse, or lemming like replies here.
• A large part of the user base supports the forum with their wallets either through sponsorship, contributing to the annual fund raiser, or both, and by support our vendor sponsors. We users ensure that this awesome font of knowledge exists not only for our use but that it continues on for the next guy and that it sticks to it's intended purpose. If the site became something other than what's made it the success it is users would stop supporting it with their dollars. If you want an example of this look at any forum on (or used to be) on the Tapatalk platform. Unlike social media this site is not subject to the whim, motivation, manipulation, or agenda of a single CEO, corporate board, or share price.

Over the years I've sometimes had barley time to visit this forum more than a handful of times let alone post, like for a year at a time even. I would have liked to but life sometimes takes precedence, as it does for us all. I have maintained a sponsorship and contributed to the annual fund raiser every year since joining regardless, well most I think I might have missed it fund raiser or two. I do it because this forum holds a wealth of value for me and everyone else, including those that aren't yet members and because it was only here for me to benefit from because it was supported by those that preceded me. What I've learned here over the years is worth heads and shoulders above the quarter a day supporting the site costs me. There's answers here to questions that I've still not thought of yet so it gives me a great deal of satisfaction in supporting it financially. I don't that is something anyone could say about any social media site, ever.

Actually large majority of them are more y'all age group....least 50+.
There are .ore people my age over there by a large margin but we still make up a smaller minority.
Discord and reddit is more out majority thing
