Just returned from a trip out west to Western South Dakota. Managed a Bison hunt with 1874 Sharps Rifles. Stumbled on a rancher that had a herd of American Bison on 5000 acres on prairie grass. Took my grandson Ethan who wanted to take his 270 Win. Said the only way he could go was if he used my Long Range Express 45-70 with a tang sight. Two other black powder shooters also went and got bison. Notice Jeff who had trouble with his paper patched boolits falling out of the cases. But managed to get a good shot off with 70 grs of 2F and a 500 gr paper patched boolit. Shooter Mike was having fun taking out prairie dogs with his Pedersoli 45-70 Sharps. These bison were warry and would bolt if hunters were winded which happened to us the first day. Had to stalk them creeping through the prairie grass while dodging ground cactus. Was able to creep downwind finally and get to within a 180 yard position. Not used to shooting on my knees off shooting sticks but that's what it took. Only had open sights on my Shiloh Farmingdale 1874 45-90 Custom Business Rifle Sharps. One photo shows the herd on the horizon. The target is a bit larger than a grapefruit that places the shot through both lungs. Had a good hold and managed to drive a 400 gr chunk of lead through the right shoulder and take out both lungs. The 3 year old turned and walked 40ft before falling over. Now the work begins! Getting this hulk of an animal loaded into a pickup truck was a chore! One of the best western hunts ever! Still butchering this animal. The bison cheese burgers are great!
