    KATONKA KTAY 1874 Sharps

Just returned from a trip out west to Western South Dakota. Managed a Bison hunt with 1874 Sharps Rifles. Stumbled on a rancher that had a herd of American Bison on 5000 acres on prairie grass. Took my grandson Ethan who wanted to take his 270 Win. Said the only way he could go was if he used my Long Range Express 45-70 with a tang sight. Two other black powder shooters also went and got bison. Notice Jeff who had trouble with his paper patched boolits falling out of the cases. But managed to get a good shot off with 70 grs of 2F and a 500 gr paper patched boolit. Shooter Mike was having fun taking out prairie dogs with his Pedersoli 45-70 Sharps. These bison were warry and would bolt if hunters were winded which happened to us the first day.Click image for larger version.

ID:	331492 Had to stalk them creeping through the prairie grass while dodging ground cactus. Was able to creep downwind finally and get to within a 180 yard position. Not used to shooting on my knees off shooting sticks but that's what it took. Only had open sights on my Shiloh Farmingdale 1874 45-90 Custom Business Rifle Sharps. One photo shows the herd on the horizon. The target is a bit larger than a grapefruit that places the shot through both lungs. Had a good hold and managed to drive a 400 gr chunk of lead through the right shoulder and take out both lungs. The 3 year old turned and walked 40ft before falling over. Now the work begins! Getting this hulk of an animal loaded into a pickup truck was a chore! One of the best western hunts ever! Still butchering this animal. The bison cheese burgers are great!Click image for larger version.

Sounds like a great time! I gotta dust off my Shilo Sharps 1874 Carbine and try to get up there someday.

    Thanks for sharing.

A bison hunt is on my bucket list. Guess I had better get started on lining one up.

What a fun, and meat productive trip that was. Thanks for sharing what the ol 45/70 can still do with aplomb.

I'll have to work up some loads for my Uberti 1885 in 405 Winchester (I load 40-70 Sharps loads in it!)

I know a good place to make your dreams come true! All four of us took a bison with our 1874 Sharps! It was an open range hunt. PM me and I will set you up.

I have taken 4 buffalo and my first was also in South Dakota. You chose a great buffalo for the best meat. I was told by the rancher who had the buffalo herd that if you want great eating meat take only a buffalo that is 3 years old or younger for good tender meat. I used a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70 for my hunts and all were one shot kills. My load was a cast 350 gr. FN bullet basked by 43 gr. of 4198 powder for a velocity of just over 1800 FPS.
